The Book of Genesis Chapters 18 - 19 The Story of ABRAHAM Sodom & Gomorrah

Slide5:

Genesis chapter 18 v 1 - 5 NIV The Lord appeared to Abraham near the great tree of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day. Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground. He said, “If I have found favour in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by. Let a little water be brought, and rest under this tree. Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way – now that you have come to your servant”. “Very well”, they answered…” .

Slide6:

Like Abraham, we may approach God with freedom and confidence (Ephesians chapter 3 v 12) Our coming before God should be in all humility and awe (Psalm 95 v 6 - 7) We should come with a desire to serve Him (Psalm 123 v 1 – 2)

Slide7:

Genesis chapter 18 v 16 – 33 NIV When the men got up to leave, they looked down towards Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them on their way. Then the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations of the earth will be blessed through him. For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him”. .

Then Then the Lord said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin is so grievous that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry has reached me. If not, I will know” The men turned away and went towards Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the Lord. Then Abraham approached him and said, “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked? What if there are 50 righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the 50 righteous people in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing – to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike.

Slide9:

Nm Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?” Then the Lord said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.” Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold, though I am nothing but dust and ashes, what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city because of 5 people?” “If I find 45 there, “he said, “I will not destroy it.” Once again he spoke to him, “What if only 40 are found there? He said, “For the sake of 40, I will not do it.” Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only 30 can be found there?” He answered, “I will not do it if I find 30 there.”

Slide10:

Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only 20 can be found there?”. He said, “For the sake of 20, I will not destroy it.” Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only 10 can be found there?”. He answered, “For the sake of 10, I will not destroy it.” When the Lord had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.

Slide11:

Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen (Ezekiel chapter 16 v 49 – 50) In the same way, the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion (Romans chapter 1 v 27) .

Slide12:

Keep in step with the Spirit (Galatians chapter 5 v 25) P resent your prayers and petitions to God (Philippians chapter 3 v 6) Pray with boldness (2 Corinthians chapter 3 v 12) Pray with perseverance (Luke chapter 18 v 1) Be careful not to grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians chapter 4 v 30) In humility, remember how we are formed - that “we are dust” (Psalm 103 v 14)

Slide13:

Genesis chapter 19 v 27 -29 Early the next morning, Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the Lord. He looked down towards Sodom and Gomorrah, towards all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace. So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham , and he brought Lot out of the catastrophe that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.

Slide14:

Pray with a confident expectation that God will answer you (Matthew chapter 7 v 7 - 8) Align your prayerful expectations with the biblical revelation of God’s character: “Far be it from you… to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike” (Genesis chapter 18 v 25) And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness”, and he was called God’s friend (James chapter 2 v 23)
