RECAP - BACKGROUND Born in Tarsus of Cilicia - a Roman province in SE Asia (modern Turkey) circa AD 3-5 Born of Jewish ancestry – a Hebrew or Israelite of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin Born a Roman citizen Son of a Pharisee, he became a strict Pharisee Taught in Jerusalem by Gamaliel – the greatest teacher among the Pharisees. Paul himself became an expert on Jewish law and excelled above all others. He earned the equivalent of two PhD degrees He was a trained tent maker Conversion AD 36

AD 36 – 39: DAMASCUS & ARABIA Initial preaching in Damascus Went to Arabia – the desert east and south of Damascus for about three years – time of preparation, personal reflection and revelation from the Lord Returned to Damascus - experienced persecution! An attempt was made to kill him. He escaped by being lowered in a basket through an opening in the city wall by his followers at night

AD 39: FIRST VISIT TO JERUSALEM Sceptical reception by the church! Barnabas introduced him Met with Peter and stayed with him fifteen days also met James - the Lord’s brother Preached in Jerusalem – given free access to the church - proclaimed boldly in the name of Jesus Further attempts made on his life! – considered a dangerous enemy to his former friends Sent to Tarsus by way of Caesarea

AD 39-43: FIVE YEARS IN SYRIA & CILICIA Returned to Tarsus Preached here in his place of birth and surrounding regions of Syria and Cilicia Joined by Barnabas – shared work and travelled together Little else known of this time, but churches may have been established and probably endured persecution Paul had a vision of Paradise ( 2Cor 12:1-4)

WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM THE LIFE OF PAUL I N THESE EARLY YEARS? Not idle!!! Immediately after conversion – baptised and started preaching Background - every aspect of Paul’s life prior to conversion prepared him for the work the Lord had planned for him 4. Took time for personal reflection, preparation and waiting on God
