Reading comprehension is fundamental to learning in the subjects we teach. Yet some students experience a breakdown in reading comprehension. So teachers must use different teaching tools to improve student comprehension. Analogy Charting : Analogy Charting Vocabulary analogy Slide 4: New Concept Familiar Concept Analogy Chart Relationship Categories Slide 5: Budget Spending Money Analogy Chart Relationship Categories Plan on how to spend your money Having money to spend Controlling money expenditures Analogy Charting Steps : Analogy Charting Steps Determine what students already know. Select a familiar concept to be introduced. Introduce an Analogy Chart and provide copies for students to complete. Have them write down similarities. Ask students to brainstorm how the new concepts are different. Slide 7: 4. Discuss with the students categories that make up the basis for comparison. 5. Have students write a summary statement about the similarities of the new concept.
