Sacco and Vanzetti : Sacco and Vanzetti On April 15, 1920, Nicola Sacco and Bartolommeo Vanzetti were accused of Murdering a clerk and a security guard during an anarchist rally Despite the lack of substantial evidence, they were convicted and sentenced to death due to the fact they were anarchists It served as a major sign of the Red Scare, even on the state and national levels. General Mitchell A. Palmer : General Mitchell A. Palmer Mitchell A. Palmer was the Attorney General in the early 20’s Worried about the Bolsheviks revolution, Palmer became offensive towards extremists, anarchists, and Communists. He believed that the large amounts of labor strikes were anarchists trying to topple the government In 1920, he arrested a gigantic amount of suspected anarchists and extremists were rounded up and deported without them doing anything terrorist- like against the government Became known as the Palmer Raids Ku Klux Klan : Ku Klux Klan It was an extremist group that supported white supremacy, white nationalism, and Nativism Discriminated against immigrants, unions, African Americans, Jews, and Catholic Despite their first Klan dying out in the 1870’s, they came back in 1915 and became extremely popular (3-6 Million members at it’s prime) They committed horrendous crimes, including Lynching, brutal attacks, and bribing political officials Nativism : Nativism During the 20’s, many Americans began discriminating against immigrants, specifically western European immigrants. People feared that they would steal many jobs from “True Americans” Also, groups like the KKK discriminated heavily on almost all immigrants Even the government was influenced by it. The Immigration Act of 1924 put quotas on most countries that only allowed the amount of people equal to 2% of the American population for a country per year! Why I Chose This Issue : Why I Chose This Issue I chose to do the power point on the discrimination because I thought it was important for us as a country to recognize our mistakes that we made in the past so that we can evolve into a better nation.
