Premium member Presentation Transcript Klu Klux Klan : Klu Klux Klan By Hannah Goddard When/How the Klan started : When/How the Klan started Started after the civil war Six young men decided to make a group to occupy themselves The first branch Was started in Pulaski, Tennessee in May 1866 A general organization of the Klan was established in Nashville, Tennessee in April 1867 Why People Did It : Why People Did It Southerners were angry that African Americans won their freedom Angry because they didn’t have their slaves anymore Felt threatened because they thought Blacks would become more powerful What They Did : What They Did Tortured former slaves During mobbings they would yell racist things Would hurt people who spoke out against them Kidnapped people and hanged them Had shooting rallies for African Americans About The Klan : About The Klan The head of the group was called the Grand Cyclops Everyone else was called a ghoul They put on white masks Made themselves seem like ghosts to people Hardly ever arrested because they never stayed in one place Most leaders used to be a part of the Confederate Army People They Targeted : People They Targeted African Americans (ex-slaves) People who spoke out against the Klan Sympathetic whites Immigrants After the First World War the KKK became extremely hostile towards Jews, Roman-Catholics, socialists, communists, and anyone they thought were “foreign” What Led to the end of the Klux Klux Klan : What Led to the end of the Klux Klux Klan Radical Republicans asked president Ulysses S. Grant to take action against the Klux Klux Klan In 1870 he sent out and investigation of the Klan's Congress passed the Klux Klux Act and became a law on April 20, 1871 Reformed : Reformed The organization was reformed in 1915 by William J. Simmons a preacher influenced by Thomas Dixon’s book “The Klux Klux Klan” National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) : National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) After the KKK was reformed it was the main opponent of the KKK In 1920 held its annual conference in Atlanta (considered to be the most advanced Klux Klux Klan area in the United States) You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
