Dance Marathons &Flagpole Sitting Competitions : 

Dance Marathons &Flagpole Sitting Competitions *In dance marathons, couples would try to be the last couple still dancing to try to win thousands of dollars *Many people went to them every weekend *The longest dance marathon recorded lasted for 3 weeks *The excitement of flagpole sitting lasted from 1924-1929 *This was used as a test of endurance, and just for entertainment

Flappers : 

Flappers New “liberated” women of the 1920s They were carefree, young women who had short “bobbed” hair, wore heavy makeup, and wore short skirts The women bold and shocking behavior as a sign or changing morals Flapper image reinforced the idea that women had more freedom, and more people were beginning to challenge traditional ways

The Radio : 

The Radio The 1st radio station was KDKA Pittsburgh in 1920 The radio allowed listeners to experience events as they happened By the end of 1923, 556 stations existed in the U.S. Radios were used to advertise many things, such as campaigns, and household items

Jazz Music : 

Jazz Music Jazz music influenced many aspects of society. It captured the spirit of the 1920’s, so that era became known as the “Jazz Age”. Jazz was also extremely popular because it allowed the performer to create his or her own rhythm.

Movies : 

Movies The essence of movies was entertainment They made people laugh and entertained a wide audience The 1st movie theaters were called Nickelodeons, which charged only a nickel The Jazz Singer was the 1st talking movie

Cross Word Puzzles : 

Cross Word Puzzles During the 1920s there was a huge cross word puzzle craze In 1923, cross word puzzles were getting published in many American newspapers The cross word puzzles were so popular in America that they soon spread to Europe
