Slide 1:

What have you learnt from your audience feedback ? Larna McCann

1) Would you be interested in watching the full half hour documentary?:

1) Would you be interested in watching the full half hour documentary? In response to this question, 15 out of 16 people agreed that they would watch the full length documentary, with only one person saying they wouldn't. This was an unexpected result as our target audience is much older than those who participated in the survey, suggesting that our product could appeal to a wider audience than we initially thought. The result also shows that in our product, we met professional standards as the vast majority of those viewing it said they would watch the whole thing, anchoring how it comes across with professionalism.

2) What would you say is a strength of our documentary?:

2) What would you say is a strength of our documentary? The variety of strengths depicted by our audience suggests that we met a lot of codes and conventions in our documentary, as many aspects were seen as strong. Interestingly, 40% of people said that the interviews were a strength of the documentary, anchoring how these were one of the most important features in our documentary. Strong narrative received the fewest votes and so perhaps this is something we would have improved on.

3) What would you say is a weakness to our documentary?:

3) What would you say is a weakness to our documentary? Judging from the response to this question, the largest weakness of our documentary was our voice over, as this received the highest number of votes. The topic was also one of the most common responses to this question, however this was expected as our target audience is older than those surveyed. Some people also disliked our mise -en-scene as they believed it looked forced, with other people being critical of the archive material giving reasons that there was too much. From this feedback, I have learnt that our voice-over was perhaps unsuitable for our product as some people commented that it sounded awkward and at times too quiet. We could have also cut down on archive material and made the mise -en-scene a little bit more subtle.

4)Do you think the voice over is appropriate for our documentary?:

4)Do you think the voice over is appropriate for our documentary? Surprisingly, 93% of people said that the voice over was appropriate for our documentary, despite this being pointed out as one of the main weaknesses. These responses suggest that although we chose a suitable person to narrate our voice over (middle-aged woman speaking in standard English), she may not have had the most confident and clear voice and perhaps someone with a stronger voice may have been more fitting.

5) On a scale of 1-5, how would you rate the following aspects?:

5) On a scale of 1-5, how would you rate the following aspects? Mise -en-scene 1 2 3 - 3 4 - 7 5 - 6 Editing 1 2 3 4 - 8 5 - 8 Content 1 2 - 1 3 4 - 6 5 -9 Continuity 1 2 3 - 3 4 - 4 5 - 9 These results tell me a lot about the quality and professionalism of each individual aspect of my documentary. Firstly, for the mise -en-scene nobody scored it lower than a 3 indicating that this was quite a good aspect of our product as the majority of people awarded it a 4/5. Moreover, the editing was particularly well score as 100% of people gave this a 4 or more, suggesting that this was a particular strength of the documentary. The majority of people gave our content high markings out of 5, with only one person scoring it a 2. In their comments, they reasoned this with them not being interested by the topic which is understandable as those answering the questionnaire were not within our target audience. Furthermore, we also received respectable marks for our continuity suggesting that the documentary flows well and has a strong narrative structure.

6) Would the radio trailer make you want to watch the documentary?:

6) Would the radio trailer make you want to watch the documentary? 13 out of 16 people said that the radio trailer made them want to watch the documentary which shows that it managed to intrigue most people. However 3 people did disagree with this, suggesting how the radio trailer didn’t appeal to everyone. Presumably, this is due to the style of our radio trailer as we used an old song as the backing track suggesting that it is aimed at an older generation, rather than the people being questioned. This shows that if we wanted to appeal to a wider/younger target audience, we should have used a more modern sound track in our radio advert.

7) What would you say is a strength of our radio trailer?:

7) What would you say is a strength of our radio trailer? 50% of people asked said that the background music was a strength of our radio trailer. This shows that for our topic we chose a suitable style of music to anchor the themes, even though this may not appeal to a younger audience. Many people also liked the content of our radio trailer which shows that we selected relevant sound bites from our interviews to include in the sequence. However, no-one voted for the editing as a strength of the radio trailer, depicting how the assembly of our trailer could have been better and the sound levels could have been improved.

8) What would you say is a weakness of our radio trailer?:

8) What would you say is a weakness of our radio trailer? In response to this question, over 40% of people said that the voice over was a weakness of our radio trailer. Reasons given were that she sounded awkward and monotone which shows me that maybe she wasn’t a good choice for our voice over as she didn’t captivate the audience. Some people were also critical of the audio in our radio trailer, stating that it fluctuates at times and sometimes the background music was a little distracting. This suggests that in order to improve our trailer, we could have altered the sound levels.

9)On a scale of 1-5, how would you rate the following aspects?:

9)On a scale of 1-5, how would you rate the following aspects? Sound bed Editing Structure Content 1- 2 - 3 - 2 4 - 9 5 - 5 1- 2 - 3 - 1 4 - 4 5 - 11 1- 2 - 3 - 4 - 8 5 - 8 1- 2 - 3 - 3 4 - 6 5 - 7 Overall, these results show that each aspect of our radio trailer was done well as no-one rated us lower than a 3 in any of the four sections. People particularly seemed to like the editing and content of our trailer suggesting that we selected relevant clips to include in the advert. Moreover, we could of perhaps improved on the structure and sound bed of the radio ad as some people did only give these an average score, suggesting they lacked professionalism.

10) Would the print advert make you want to watch the documentary?:

10) Would the print advert make you want to watch the documentary? Only 1 person surveyed disagreed that the print ad would make them want to watch the documentary, with the majority of people saying they would. This tells me that our print ad worked rather effectively as most people would want to view the documentary after seeing this. This shows that the print ad served its purpose in attracting viewers and gathering interest in my product.

11) What would you say is a strength of the print advert?:

11) What would you say is a strength of the print advert? In response to this question, a variety of aspects from our print advert were selected as strengths . This suggests that the print advert as a whole works well as most features on it were seen as particularly strong, with the layout being the most common answer. From these responses, we can conclude that we succeeded in meeting the codes and conventions of real life print ads.

12) What would you say is a weakness to our print advert?:

12) What would you say is a weakness to our print advert? Out of the 16 people surveyed, only 5 respondents pointed out weaknesses of our print ad. The majority of those who provided an answer said that they thought the font was a weakness to our print ad, arguing that this was too small on the page. Some people also said that the images were uncreative and could be a little brighter suggesting that perhaps different and more unique imagery would have worked better.

13) On a scale of 1-5, how would you rate the following aspects?:

13) On a scale of 1-5, how would you rate the following aspects? Editing Continuity Professionalism Slogan 1 2 3 - 1 4 - 5 5 - 10 1 2 3 - 2 4 - 4 5 - 10 1 2 3 - 1 4 - 5 5 - 10 1 2 -1 3 - 3 4 - 3 5 - 9 These results suggest that the weakest part of our print ad was the slogan, as this received the worst reviews with some people scoring it a 2 out of 5. This suggests that perhaps we could have made the slogan more quirky/catchy as slogans generally follow these conventions. However, the remaining aspects of our print ad received average and above scores as no other section was given lower than a 3. This depicts how the editing, continuity and professionalism on our print ad was achieved quite well as people weren’t very critical of these aspects.

14) Can you make a link between all 3 of our products?:

14) Can you make a link between all 3 of our products? 16 0 100% of those surveyed said that they could make a link between all 3 of our products which demonstrates how the three work well together. As everyone agreed yes to this question, this shows that both the documentary and the ancillary texts have similarities that are obvious enough to show that the 3 products are linked.
