Free iTunes Ringtone Tutorial :Free iTunes Ringtone Tutorial By: Landon Wolford (:

Slide 2:Okay, so I’m going to take you through the method for making iPhone ringtones with iTunes. I’m using iTunes 9.0.1.8 but I’m sure it works on previous versions as well. Before we start some things need to be in order with your iTunes and computer for this to work properly…

Slide 3:On your computer, go to the Start menu and select Control Panel.

Slide 4:Then select Folder Options and go to the tab View and make sure that the checkbox next to Hide extensions for known file types… is unchecked. Click OK and exit out of Control Panel.

Slide 5:In iTunes go to Edit in the menu and all the way at the bottom is Preferences… Ctrl+,. Click on that and a dialog box titled iTunes will open.

Slide 6:Then click on Import Settings…. Another dialog box titled Import Settings will open and it should look like this… If it doesn’t, use the drop down menus to change it. This is important. After you’ve done this, it won’t need to be changed ever again.

Step 1: :Step 1: Now we can move on to the actual method. First things first, you need to pick the song you would like to have a ringtone of. Don’t worry it won’t ruin the song or anything. Some people say this doesn’t work with purchased songs from the iTunes Store, but it does for me. In my example I’ll be using “Dental Care” by Owl City (playing), which I purchased.

Step 2: :Step 2: Right-click on the song title and click Get Info on the menu that pops up.

Step 3: :Step 3: In the dialog box that appears click on the tab Options (shown in Step 4). This is where the actual “trimming” of the song occurs.

Step 4: :Step 4: This is the step that takes some playing around with. Listen to the song and find a good section you want. A good idea is to keep it around 30 seconds that way it’s not too long and not too large of a file. When you find what part you want remember the start time and end time of that section (in my example the section I want is 28 seconds long and from 1:59.5 to 2:27.5) and put it in the Start Time and Stop Time text boxes. They should automatically check after you type a time in them, if they don’t check them both and click OK.

Step 4 (continued) :Step 4 (continued)

Step 5: :Step 5: Right-click on the song again, but this time click Create AAC Version. This will create a copy of the song, but only the amount of time the Start Time and Stop Time allows (In my example my copy was only 28 seconds long). After that version is done being created your ready for the next step.

Step 6: :Step 6: Right-click on the new shortened song and select Show in Windows Explorer. The newly created file should be highlighted in a list of songs on that same album in a folder that automatically pops up.

Step 7: :Step 7: Right-click on the highlighted song file (usually has the track number in front of its title and since it’s a new file with a repeating title it should have a “ 1” after the title) and select Rename. Now change the .m4a into .m4r which is an iTunes ringtone file. Keep this window open.

Step 8: :Step 8: Go back into iTunes and delete the shorter version of the song (the one you just created).

Step 9: :Step 9: Now drag the ringtone file you just created into the iTunes Library. If you haven’t had any ringtones a new folder will be added to your library entitled Ringtones and have a bell icon next to it.

Step 10: :Step 10: You’re going to want to uncheck the Start and Stop Times in the original song or it will only play that part the next time you play that song. That is the last step!

Congratulations! :Congratulations! If you did all the steps right then… Congratulations! You just created your very first free iPhone ringtone with iTunes!
