Plastic Pollution :

Plastic Pollution How is plastic waste affecting our environment???

What is Plastic ? :

What is Plastic ? Plastic is a by-product of crude oil and fractions of natural gas. Plastics like vinyl are made from acids and petroleum by-products. It is then heated and treated with chemicals and a liquid substance is formed. It is then moulded into various shapes.

Two basic types of plastics :

Two basic types of plastics Thermosetting set to a permanent shape cannot be softened. are used for multiple use items, such as dishes and furniture. Thermoplastics soft when exposed to heat and pressure and harden when cooled. the most common type of plastic are used to make a variety of products.

Types of Thermoplastics :

Types of Thermoplastics

Reasons for plastic usage :

Reasons for plastic usage Easy to make anything. Easily available. Cheap and inexpensive. Long lasting.

General impact :

General impact Plastics do not degrade easily. Plastic litter is itself a danger to wildlife. (for cows.) Requires high energy ultra violet light to break down. High possibilities of plastics entering the food chain.

The threat to marine life. :

The threat to marine life. Turtles – get entangled in fishing nets, have been found dead with plastic bags in their stomachs. Other marine mammals – cape fur seal gets caught up in a large piece of plastic, it may simply drown.

Contd… :

Contd… Marine birds are the worst affected by this, as plastics remain in their stomachs, blocking digestion and causing starvation. Plastic bags and other plastic garbage thrown into the ocean kill as many as 1 million sea creatures every year.

Who is responsible for this…? :

Who is responsible for this…? Remember - Nearly every piece of plastic EVER made still exists today.

Conservation Action :

Conservation Action What we can do???

Conservation Act,2002 :

Conservation Act,2002 Right: In India, inexpensive plastic products (often made with imported post-consumer plastics) threaten to displace traditional crafts and artisans. As a result, people are facing rising unemployment and intensified impoverishment. Previous to the inundation by plastics, many containers and packaging materials were hand made and produced with natural, bio-degradable materials.

What can be done… :

What can be done… Reduce the usage of plastics in day-to-day life. Say ‘NO’ to vendors when they offer you a plastic bag. Reuse the plastic products And recycle them. Plastics should never be Disposed off in sewages.

Slide 16:

Disposing Procedure Of Plastic Bags.

What’s the scene in India..? :

What’s the scene in India..? The govt. has recently banned thin plastic bags used by grocery stores. Plastic bags of 50 microns would be used. Plastic bags can be exchanged at recycling centres set by the civic body.
