Obtaining food in plants :

Obtaining food in plants

Competition :

Competition Plants are SESSILE which means that they depend on simple nutrients that are ‘delivered’ to them. COMPETITION in plants is for: light soil nutrients

Competition for light :

Competition for light COMPENSATION POINT is the light intensity at which the rate of photosynthesis is equal to the rate of respiration. It varies depending on the species Is when the food made = food used. Is when CO2 uptake = CO2 output COMPENSATION PERIOD is the time taken to reach the compensation point after being in darkness.

Shade Sun :

Shade Sun Has a lower compensation point has a shorter compensation period successful in shaded areas e.g. Forest floor more efficient at photosynthesis in low light intensities. Has a higher compensation point Has a longer compensation period Requires higher light intensities to show a net energy gain.

Effect of Grazing :

Effect of Grazing No grazing Dominant species flourish at expensive of others few biodiversity. Medium grazing strongest competitors are kept in check so other species can grow high biodiversity High Intensity some species may be completely removed few biodiversity
