Special populations:

Special populations M odule 5 addresses program goals that deal with understanding and addressing the needs of Special Populations. Goals 20. Based on assessed student needs, provide accommodations and implement modifications. 22. Instruct special populations using adopted standards-aligned instructional materials and resources.

Module 5 Objectives:

Module 5 Objectives For each of the three module goals, participating teachers will… e ngage in individualized learning activities that will add to their understanding of the issues a pply this knowledge to their own teaching practice i dentify 1-2 “artifacts” of their teaching that represent mastery of the goal in practice display these artifacts in their e-portfolio r eflect on how the chosen artifacts demonstrate mastery of the goal

Goal 20 Accommodations for students with special needs Focus Questions – Use these questions to help you choose your individual learning activities How do I come to know and understand the special needs of my students? In what ways do I plan accommodations and modifications for my students while still maintaining the integrity of the assignment/activity? How do I work with support staff (instructional aids/SSN specialists) to plan and implement modifications ? How do I assess student work when accommodations and modifications have been employed ? Based on assessed student needs, provide accommodations and implement modifications.

Goal 20 Accommodations for Students with special needs Individualized Learning Activities Access the IEP’s of your students with special needs (or better yet – sit in on an IEP meeting). For information on the IEP process – see here . Explore Resources for Students with Special Needs Parent Hub – Resources and Accommodations Learn about UDL (Universal Design for Learning) Speak to district specialists and your support provider about how to best accommodate students with special needs Read articles/ blogs on creating accommodations and modifications for SSNs. Search the internet for accommodations for the specific learning needs of the students in my classroom. Potential Artifacts Alternative directions/accommodations for an activity or assignment (provide original directions and highlight what has been changed to accommodate students with special needs Design a lesson plan that employs UDL principles Create an annotated database of websites and articles that describe specific accommodations Create a “Top 10” list of quick and effective accommodations and modifications that can be used in a variety of teaching environments. Describe the accommodations/modifications Based on assessed student needs, provide accommodations and implement modifications.

Where can I learn new instructional strategies to make me a more effective teacher? Instruct special populations using adopted standards-aligned instructional materials and resources.

Goal 22 Teaching Students with special needs Individualized Learning Activities Explore Common Core State Standards resources for students with special needs – CCSS resources Ask fellow teachers and your support provider what standards-aligned instructional resources they use to ensure support for students with special needs Search the internet for standards-aligned instructional strategies View videos on The Teaching Channel that model effective instructional strategies that support students with special needs Potential Artifacts Create an annotated list of instructional-strategies steeped in the CCSS Provide an annotated list of websites that house standards-aligned instructional resources Create a Livebinder filled with standards-aligned instructional resources – share it with your peers Detail a step-by-step standards-based instructional strategy that you find to be effective Take a picture showing the instructional resources you that provides support for students with special needs Instruct special populations using adopted standards-aligned instructional materials and resources.
