George Washington’s Whiskey Rebellion boxfacebook: facebook Wall Photos Flair Boxes George Washington Logout Wall Info Photos Boxes Dear Britain and France, The United States has no intention of getting involved in yet another one of your little disputes. I am officially declaring Neutrality, that means we will not be favoring either one of you. I do not appreciate your stopping of American ships and taking our cargo. And specifically you Great Britain, shame on you for impressing our sailors. You have no right seizing our sailors and forcing them to serve in the British navy. As I am well aware that 75% of our exports are sold to you we tried to make peace with you. I sent over one of the finest men in America, John Jay, however Jay’s Treaty. In said treaty we have agreed to pay our debts off that we owe you but you also need to remember your end of the bargain which I shall list for you. You agreed to pay for the ships you seized, withdraw your troops from the northwest Territory and stop helping Native Americans there. I, nor my fellow countrymen are too happy that you have refused to stop impressing our sailors or recognize our right to trade with France. This treaty has been approved, the Republicans are angry but the Federalists are just happy we are still on speaking terms. Sincerely, George POTUS George Washington’s Declaration of Neutrality and Jay’s Treaty box George Washington is ready for some rest and relaxation at Mount Vernon. Why... Entangle our peace and prosperity in the toils of European ambition?... It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world.” --George Washington Farewell Address 1796 You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
