About Us :About Us Started on 12th June 2002, By BHEL Trichy and IIT Madras.
It’s a prestigious MoU between BHEL Trichy and IIT Madras.
Initially started with Computational Engineering.
After Successful completion of Four Batches, We have Started Two more Courses namely Welding engineering and Energy Engineering in 2006.

Curriculum :Curriculum Conventional and Advanced Welding Processes
Arc welding processes like SMAW, SAW, FCAW, GTAW and GMAW; Process parameters; Process characteristics; Process applications; Selection of process consumables; Consumable evaluation and acceptance as per various codes; Resistance welding processes for special applications; Advanced welding processes like plasma, EBW and laser; Cladding & hard-facing applications; Gas, plasma and laser cutting applications .
Welding Metallurgy
Review of metallurgy of carbon and alloy steels; Time-temperature transformation and continuous cooling transformation diagrams; Role of welding heat input and thermal cycles; Microstructures in weld metal and heat affected zones; Weldability of steels; Hot and cold cracking of steels; Effect of impurity elements on the weldability of steels; Metallurgy of stainless and other alloy steels; Weldability of salient non-ferrous metals and alloys.
Welding Design and Testing of Welds
Welding symbols as per AWS and ISO systems; Weld design for butt, tee, lap, corner and edge joints; Design of welds for tension, compression, bend and torsion type of loading; Fatigue and fatigue design of welds; Destructive testing of welds to evaluate tensile and 0.2% proof strength, hardness, impact properties; Welding defects and their significance; Non-destructive testing techniques like PT, MT, UT, RT and evaluation of defect sizing.
Curriculum :Curriculum Welding Applications and Developments
Conventional features and developments in welding power sources; Fixtures and positioners; Welding automation and robots - requirements and latest features; Orbital welding; Narrow-gap welding; Welding in structural manufacturing industry; Welding in pressure vessel industry; Welding in power sector industries - hydel, thermal and nuclear; Welding in ship building and off-shore structures; Productivity and safety in a welding shop.
Welding Codes and Standards
Structural welding code (AWS, D-1.1); Pressure vessel code (ASME, Sec-VIII); Codes for welding procedure and performance qualification (ASME, Sec-IX); Codes for material and welding consumables qualification (ASME, Sec-II) and petroleum pipeline code (API, 1104); Material, fabrication, testing and inspection of the above codes.
Project Work
Project Work will be of six months duration. Selection and assignment of projects will be done by students, faculty from IIT Madras and BHEL specialists. Project selection will focus on practical application of techniques and methods taught as part of the curriculum. BHEL's specialist welding engineers will be appointed as project guides for each student.

Programme :Programme The first half of the one year programme comprises of theory classes, seminars, assignments and practical lab works. The second half of the year will be devoted entirely to major project work in modern engineering enterprise such as BHEL.
Projects will be screened by IIT Madras and BHEL Trichy to ensure that they involve practical application of Advanced welding and theoretical concepts in arriving at solutions to complex welding engineering challenges.
