What are the conjunctive adverbs? : 

What are the conjunctive adverbs? There are many; here are a few and what they mean (on handout):

Let’s look at some examples : 

Let’s look at some examples There are several hundred languages in the world. Not all of them have a written form. Joined by a conjunction: … world, but not all of them… Joined by a conjunctive adverb: There are several hundred languages in the world; however, not all of them have a written form. OR There are several hundred languages in the world. However, not all of them have a written form.

Examples : 

Examples Chinese has many different dialects. Chinese people cannot always understand each other. Joined by a conjunction: … dialects, so Chinese people… Joined by a conjunctive adverb: Chinese has many different dialects; therefore, Chinese people cannot always understand each other. OR Chinese has many different dialects. Therefore, Chinese people cannot always understand each other.

Examples : 

Examples International companies are growing. They need more bilingual workers. Joined by a conjunction: … are growing, so they need … Joined by a conjunctive adverb: International companies are growing; consequently, they need more bilingual workers. OR International companies are growing. Consequently, they need more bilingual workers.

Why use conjunctive adverbs? :
