MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION Presented by S.L.Kiruthika B.Ed Computer Science

MEASUREMENT:

MEASUREMENT J.P Guilford has defined the term measurement as follows “Measurement means the description of data. In terms of numbers and this, in turn means taking advantage of the many benefits that operate with numbers and mathematics thinking Provide.”

Campbell defines measurement as:

Campbell defines measurement as “ The assignment of numerals to objects or events according to certain rules is called measurement.”

The term “Measurement” and “Evaluation” are often used interchangeably. However, in psychological, sociological and educational researches these two terms are used separately because they connote two different meanings.:

“Measurement” refers to the process of assigning numerals to events, objects, etc. according to certain rules. Tyler ( 1963 : 7) defines measurement as “assignment of numerals according to rules.” A still more elaborate and wider definition has given by Nunnally (1970 : 7) “ Measurement consists of rules for assigning numbers to objects in such a way as to represent quantities of attributes”:

Measurement is different from its so called synonym “evaluation”. By evaluation is meant appraisal or assessment with respect to some standard. Tuckman (1975) defines evaluation as “a process where in the parts, process, or outcomes of a program are examined to see whether they are satisfactory, particularly with reference the programs stated objectives, our own expectations, or our own standards of excellence. :

Thus an evaluation invokes a process of appraisal of an object or event with reference to some standard. The standard may be social, cultural or scientific the standard may also true or arbitrary.:

Measurement and Evaluation:

Measurement and Evaluation Measurement and evaluation are the very old process which are not only used in behavioral science – psychology and education but it is an origin of physical sciences and arithmetic. The development measurement goes side by side the human development. The advancement of any nation and country is based on its precise devices and technique of measurement. The precision of measurement is most important criterion of the development of human civilization.

Measurement and Evaluation:

Measurement and Evaluation The evaluation is an informal and continuous process. It takes place every time in every walk of life. The objects, facts, events and behaviors are continuously evaluated.

Difference between Measurement and Evaluation:

Difference between Measurement and Evaluation S. No Evaluation Measurement 1. It is a modern concept. It represents old traditional, ideas 2. Evaluation goes on with process Examination comes at the end of the process. 3. Evaluation is always based objectives of teaching It demands standard of performance.

PowerPoint Presentation:

4. It is a continuous process. It is not a continuous process. 5. Evaluation is mostly internal. Examination is mostly external. 6. It is a part of teaching learning. It is different from teaching learning. 7. It is more reliable and valid in its technique. It is least reliable and valid in its technique.

PowerPoint Presentation:

8. There are greater changes of transfer in learning. changes for transfer is minimized. 9. Under evaluation new scientific and up-to-date techniques of measurement are used. It uses dogmatic and unrealistic tools to measure attainment. 10. Evaluation among students to learn is with understanding, interest and imagination Examination for creaming of the subject matter with least understanding.

PowerPoint Presentation:

11. Evaluation based on teaching is full of utility. The knowledge acquired is readily applied and made more useful. Examination centered teaching has no utility in life. Its utility is limited up to the examination, the crammed material is ion forgotten and never applied in life.
