PowerPoint Presentation:

In celebration of our 55 th Foundation Day we are going to look back on how our school has started and became an international school.

PowerPoint Presentation:

As we all know, Dominican International School is a Catholic, private, English speaking school under the supervision of Dominican Sisters. It was formerly a contract school for the military dependents of the United States Forces in Taipei.

PowerPoint Presentation:

The Sisters are members of the Congregation of the Religious Missionaries of St. Dominic, a congregation of Spanish origin with a Motherhouse located in Rome, Italy.

PowerPoint Presentation:

The school was established through the request of a Guatemalan lady named Lucia who happened to be a devout Catholic. She is married to an American military official and has 3 children. Lucia was looking for a school wherein her children can be educated with Catholic Doctrine.

PowerPoint Presentation:

She asked for the help of Sr. Leonor Flores, who happened to be one of the school founders. In September 1956, permission from the Mother General was obtained to start a school, which will give Catholic instructions and a good education to American dependents.

PowerPoint Presentation:

The First School was organized for Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Grades 1 and 2 in a small house in Chang An Tung road. In January 1957, His Excellency, Most Reverend Anthony Riberi , D.D., Apostolic Internuncio to China blessed the school. Sr. Leonor Flores together with Sr. Patrocinio Salonga and Sr. Enriqueta Gonzalez started to teach the 16 children enrolled, from that day the enrollment increased steadily.

PowerPoint Presentation:

By June 1957 there were 76 students and two more Filipina Sisters joined the Faculty . A larger house was rented in Lung Chiang Street in 1958 and third grade was added. In 1959, a bigger building was rented.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Three more grades were added (Fourth, Fifth and Sixth grade) and more Sisters arrived from the Philippines. The first P.T.A. was organized with volunteer officers.

PowerPoint Presentation:

A big lot was purchased at the present site of Dominican International School, including strips of land to make the road leading to the lot. This was finished before materials could be brought in for the construction of the building.

PowerPoint Presentation:

A Dominican Priest blessed the first cornerstone in a simple ceremony on August 4, 1959. Materials were brought in and construction was started. By March 28, 1960, classes were held for the first time in the new school.

PowerPoint Presentation:

His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Tien , S.V.D., D.D. solemnly blessed it on April 30, 1960 then the following year Grade 7 and 8 were added. More Sisters came from the Philippines and the enrollment reached 600.

PowerPoint Presentation:

As time went by, a modern gymnasium was added, statues were erected and a wall was placed around the compound. August 1960, another edifice was completed. This has 4 classrooms, a laboratory, science room, typing room and music room.

PowerPoint Presentation:

In August 1968 a team of American educators (Superintendents of Schools) from Washington D.C. arrived. They examined the teaching qualifications of the Sisters, the curriculum, methods of teaching and the textbooks used by the students.

PowerPoint Presentation:

After examining all of these the American educators all agreed in giving recognition to the efforts of the Sisters to give an excellent education to the American dependents. It was then that Dominican School became U.S. Government contract school: Department of Defense (D.O.D.) school.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Later on, with the withdrawal of the American Forces from Taipei, Dominican School became an international school that opened her door to all nationalities yet it still adapts a modified American curriculum.

PowerPoint Presentation:

In 1995, The Bureau of Education had given the school a permission to offer complete high school courses and the enrollment reached 800.

PowerPoint Presentation:

The school had its first senior high graduates in 1999. Students have entered Colleges/universities here in Taiwan and abroad.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Even though Dominican International School has had “growing pains”, it has always been in the minds of those connected with the school to give an excellent education to all students regardless of race, color and creed.

PowerPoint Presentation:

At present, D.I.S. is in the process of reorganization still keeping with its philosophy and mission to cope with our students’ needs and to keep abreast with changing time.
