46 Restoration and reuse – Bhachau Fort

Slide 47:

47 Restoration and reuse – Bhachau Fort The site , at present, is a relatively neglected area as far as proper and intensive use is concerned. It has quite potential for good development to happen, and the place to become a favorite everyday or visiting place in the nearby region. The logics being: It houses one temple often visited by natives and The view from the place is excellent . The growth of the housing societies around the place is such that it could work very well as a recreation park with special design concentration on children. Post earthquake, Bhachau does not have any real park facility at present. This premise could act as a central park. It could act as a main node, attracting public; a pleasant and beautiful spot in the region. INTRODUCTION THE GOAL: The outdoor physical environment fosters optimal growth and development through opportunities for exploration and learning. THE OBJECTIVES: To provide childrens activity spaces in an ideal environment, primarily for children (of various age groups), much needed in the given area, to play and learn through observation. To create well organized space facilitating healthy community living and positive interaction between each-other and active involvement with different types of materials outdoors. To achieve the benefits of ‘education through nature’ by providing adequate elements and activities for exploration and learning. To provide ‘ micro-environments’ for overall development of children. The concept : ‘education through nature' Ecological garden Rock garden Windmills Windmills naturally attract children’s attention due to their lively character. An arrangement of small windmill-structures of the form of ‘ firkis’ used as toys by children, would add-on colour and dynamism to the park. views

Slide 52:

52 Grasslands and partial vegetation.. Site surroundings due to thick soil layer potential for green Good water holding capacity … terrain explored for rain water harvesting The lime stone permitting water to percolate denotes a high level of water table The complexities and contradiction on site with the sensitive terrain invigorates the mode for introspection of the site. The major concerns should be drawn on to the natural variables available. The site registered for the development has been delineated again providing an ideal setting for the park development. Development of Precinct - Balasinor “Dinosaur” the very world evokes magical images of giant prehistoric reptiles that walked on our planet 65 million years ago and then astonishingly vanished from the face of the earth forever. From uncompromising adults to wide-eyed children these mega monsters fascinate all sections of the society. Their ecosystem depicting the floral diversity with pines, palm, ferns and other early angiosperms such as magnolias needs to be understood to make the set up. The first stage is centered around the Cretaceous period (Creta from Latin for chalk) that time in the earth’s past when Gujarat was a flourishing ground for a number of dinosaur species as was much of the Gondwanaland and Laurasia land masses, part of the them super continent, Pangaea. This was the time of the first angiosperms, the first pollinating insects and also the time when our earth was on the verge of being hit by a cataclysmic asteroid, that which resulted in the extinction of the dinosaurs and also of pterosaurs, ichthyosaurs and the ammonites. Insight ….lay our foot print on to…… India was on its way of where it lies today starting a grand journey that has over millions of years covered many thousands of miles. Site context Understand the inherent Contradiction….. Marine and fresh water fossils of plants and animals… Diversity around the region identifies a complex ecosystem existed in the past

Slide 53:

53 Dinosaur National Parks have been set up and these places where large remains of dinosaurs have been excavated are considered to be of paramount geological and palaeontological . Interpretation … values The basic ideology towards the development approach of a tourism site needs to review under sensitive criteria of design brief and program. Who decides the critical development of such a prime ecological footprint? Educational tourism thus acts as a major shift from just being a amusement park?? Yet another intervention without clear intention of its sustenance Tourism development cannot certainly be achieved on mere physical building… The essential design criteria established for the project has to be questioned with basic feasibility studies, thus calls for a brain storming session for the formation of appropriate program that can answer Development of Precinct - Balasinor Lake Thick belt of limestone over granite bed rocks Farms Development ? Site as identified sits as dry arid patch between the green and blue sky Area around the site Ideal for vegetation Rural settlements?

Slide 54:

54 While surveying the site , we found that it is decided by the villagers and collector’s meeting that the road passing through the lake would be removed which leads to the village. Considering this fact, we intended to eradicate this road for the future development of the Adalaj precinct. Should the lake area - plot be fenced…. How should the lake edge be defined…… should it be treated like a plotted developments? If the space around the lake is to be developed as a coherent and responding urban edge some regulations seem to be made mandatory for the development to follow the lake development and certain reservations could be extended to the properties around the road of the lake. Existing road Site analysis Existing lake edge of the site Proposed road development for village Exhibitions Food court & Camping area Proposed Community space Historical footprints… Context… Spatial experience… Built language…. Dynamics of multiplicity and spatial experience THE STEPWELL has to offer to us, has extremely complexed anatomy of space, tectonics and elements needs primary level of anticipation in order to derive built strategy. Our concern is to intervene the similar spatial experience the step well has to offer in the exhibition space… Water Ecology Environment built strategy of historical premise…………
