Using Jing in Your Class! A Presentation by: Alex Kiewiet TE 402, Section 12 February 2011

What is Jing?:

What is Jing? Jing is a FREE(!) program which allows you to capture the screen of your MAC or PC You can take a snapshot of your screen, or a video of your activity Also, you can record your voice along with the screenshot or video Most importantly, Jing is easy to use!

How is Jing Useful for Teachers? :

How is Jing Useful for Teachers? Where to begin… There are countless ways teachers can use Jing In math, you can capture the processes of working through problems In social studies, you can show students how to use Google Maps In science, you can show students how to create surveys to compile research In art… Ok, you get the picture

But, what about literacy!?:

But, what about literacy!? In literacy, there are a few useful ways which a teacher can use Jing Creating a screencast for students and parents to teach them to use the class blog Explain directions for projects Bring up the syllabus and verbally explain the directions Teach students how to locate books in the library through an online webpage

But, I think the most useful way to use Jing is to…:

But, I think the most useful way to use Jing is to… Review student writing and record your feedback For example: In my placement my CT tracks progress in Daily 5 units through writing letters back and forth between herself and her students Students write letters about the books they are reading She has them show comprehension, motivation, interests, etc. through the letters Not only can she track progress through this, she can also get to know her students a bit better But, Jing can make this process even better!

Jing with Daily 5:

Jing with Daily 5 I plan to use Jing to respond to my students’ letters This is important because… The responses are clearer to students More engaging and interactive Better for auditory learners Can make writing more of a cycle by asking questions, and having them answer in their next letter

Example:

Example Here is an example of exactly what this would look like… http://www.screencast.com/users/kiewieta/folders/Jing/media/356d79eb-5c79-4e32-a998-0d6e6dbd4605
