Bluetooth is a short-range wireless communications technology. Why this name? It was taken from the 10th century Danish King Harald Blatand who unified Denmark and Norway. When does it appear? 1994-Ericsson study on a wireless technology to link mobile phones and accessories 5 companies joined to form the Bluetooth special Interest Group(SIG) in 1998 First specification released in July 1999 Slide 4: The Bluetooth SIG includes promoter member companies Microsoft,Ericsson,IBM,Intel,Agere,Motorola,Nokia and Toshiba, plus thousands of Associate and Adopter member Bluetooth (Special Interest Group) : Bluetooth (Special Interest Group) 5 1,900 Bluetooth Technology Manufactures IBM Slide 6: How Bluetooth technology works 1.Bluetooth is a highspeed, low power, microwave link technology designed to connect phones, laptops, pda's,and other portable equipments. 2.Unlike infrared does not require any line of sight positing. 3.It has 2.45 G.Hz and supports 721kbps. 4.Protected from radio frequencis by changing their frequencies upto 1600 times per second. It is called frequency hopping 5.connections can be point-to-point or multipoint max range is 10 mts 6.while establishing a Bluetooth one unit will behave as master and other as slaves for the piconet connections. Slide 7: Protocols used in Bluetooth Link manger protocol Logical link control Service discovery protocol Adopted protocol Obex 1.Link manager:- Responsible for link setup between devices.Including security functions autentications, encryption. 2.Logical Link Control(L2cap):-Its role is to adopt upper protocols over the base band. 3.Service discovery protocols:-provides means for client sever interaction and provides list of services. 4.Adopted protocols:-point-to-point ,tcp/ip--allows communication with any other device connected to the internet. 5.Obex:-Allows to exchange objects in a simple in a simple and spontaneous manner. 6.Baseband:-provides two different kinds of physical links.synchronous and asynchronous. Bluetooth Communication : Bluetooth Communication Link Manager Protocol (LMP) Configure, authenticate and handle the connections Power management scheme 8 Radio Frequency Communications (RF C) Controls Frequency Hopping for Bluetooth Logical Link Control (LLC) Link Management Security Management QoS Management Transmission Scheduling Bluetooth Overview : Bluetooth Overview 10 Local Area Network (LAN) Wireless Phone Network Encryption Authentication Communication Challenge-Response Scheme SAFER+ None/One-way/Mutual Needed for encryption Optional Symmetric Stream Cipher Negotiable Key Size (8-128 bits) Clock dependent Radio Frequency Hopping (1600 Hps) 2.4GHz Frequency Range RF Interface 720 Kbps – 4 Mbps Slide 11: File Transfer Profile Headset Profile Slide 12: Bluetooth Applications Slide 13: 13 Bluetooth Applications Slide 14: Advantages 1.Bluetooth devices are wireless. 2.Technology is inexpensive. 3.Low energy consumption. 4.Sharing voice and data. 5.Accesible from any where. 6.we can save time also. Slide 15: Disadvantages 1.Low range capability. 2.It has low datarate comparision to infrared.where infrared has 4mbps and bt has 1mbps. 3.Due to this Bluetooth has very slow rates for data transfer. 4.The greater range radio frequency of bluetooth make it much more open to interception and attack. 5.For this reason security is a very key aspect to the bluetooth specification. Security Weaknesses Encryption Plain Text Attack Authentication Unit Key Stealing Communication Impersonation Slide 16: Conclusion 1.A new global standard data and voice can produce. 2.By using Bluetooth can provide easy transfering of data without Cables. 3.Low Power,Low range,Low cost network devices use in this technology. 4.use advanced options for security to eliminate interception of data and voice.
