Online Video Discoverability by Kevin Engler

Objectives:

Objectives History of online video sharing Video as an instructional medium Important video sharing sites Online video content and consumption Strategies to improve video discoverability

History of Video Sharing:

History of Video Sharing 1993 Web browsers display images 1993 First webcam connected to the Internet at U. of Cambridge 1995 Streaming audio is introduced with RealAudio 1996 Computer makers establish a standard protocol for streaming video 2005 America Online provides 5 million viewers with 175,000 simultaneous streaming video feeds from Live 8 concert sites around the world 2005 First YouTube video uploaded 2009 YouTube growth - 20 hrs video/minute

Effectiveness of Instructional Video:

Effectiveness of Instructional Video “Mayer (1999) indicates that constructive learning occurs when learners are able to build such referential connections between corresponding aspects of the visual and verbal representations.” (Linos, N.D.) “Results support using video as an effective technological tool for presenting culture in the foreign language classroom.” (Herron, Dubreil, Cole, & Corrie, 2000) “The results from this project suggest that video instruction to support conventional lectures is a more effective teaching technique than conventional lectures alone or in combination with reading assignments.” (Felton, Keesee, Mattox, McCloskey & Medley, 2001) “Students in the e-learning environment that provided interactive video achieved significantly better learning performance and a higher level of learner satisfaction than those in other settings.” (Zhang, Zhou, Briggs, Nunamaker, 2005) “The research suggested that cognitive processes were stimulated by the video”. (Balslev, De Grave,Muijtjens,& Scherpbier, 2005) “The study revealed that the pupils taught with the video performed equally as well as those taught with real objects (Realia). While both groups performed significantly better than those taught with chart and without instructional medium.” (Isiaka, 2007) “Overall, results indicated that the video-driven multimedia, web-based instruction was not only pedagogically equivalent in terms of knowledge gains to the live instruction but that the knowledge gains were slightly higher among the web-based participants .” (Pang, 2009)

Available Online Video Content:

Available Online Video Content 500 million videos on the web today -VideoSurf CTO Eitan Sharon ‘09

Challenges with finding video:

Challenges with finding video Searching by Metadata Amateur annotations can be misleading, incomplete or inaccurate Expert annotations time consuming and expensive

Strategies/Technologies to Improve Discoverability:

Strategies/Technologies to Improve Discoverability Search engine optimization Speech-to-text analysis Human-computer interaction Semantic video indexing

Strategies/Technologies to Improve Discoverability:

Strategies/Technologies to Improve Discoverability 1. Search engine optimization Direct navigation to site (42%) Social/viral networking (29% and dropping) Meta tag optimization for search engines (29% and rising) - www.hitwise.com 4/09 Video Searching 2007-2008

Strategies/Technologies to Improve Discoverability:

Strategies/Technologies to Improve Discoverability Speech recognition decades old Application to web is new Speech recognizer “listens” to video files and creates text transcripts Transcripts used for searching Examples: Adobe’s Premiere Pro (CS4) - automatic text transcript from Flash video Blinkx.com - transcript indexing 2. Speech-to-text analysis

Strategies/Technologies to Improve Discoverability:

Strategies/Technologies to Improve Discoverability Identifying a general scene Identifying individual objects Identifying contextual information Object Recognition Easy Difficult

Strategies/Technologies to Improve Discoverability:

Strategies/Technologies to Improve Discoverability Semantic gap: difference between object analysis (shape) vs semantic analysis (context) Semantic Video Recognition Challenges:

Strategies/Technologies to Improve Discoverability:

Strategies/Technologies to Improve Discoverability Sensory gap: difference among images of the same object from different angles OR different objects that appear similar. Semantic Video Recognition Challenges:

Strategies/Technologies to Improve Discoverability:

Strategies/Technologies to Improve Discoverability Semantic Pathfinder Algorithm 1. Choose concept 2. Finds typical examples of objects 3. Compare against known set of objects 4. Test model for accuracy 5. Repeat with multiple models 6. Pick the best ones Semantic Video Recognition
