ASCARIASIS 807 MILLION ARE INFECTED WORLDWIDE

ascariasis:

a scariasis CAUSES: Ascariasis is transmitted through the contact with soil infested with human feces that contain ascaris eggs SYMPTOMS: Swelling of abdomen Severe abdominal pain Malnutrition Anemia Impaired physical growth TREATMENT: Medications: albendazole , ivermectine , mebendazole Surgery is also a possibility if the worms have caused extreme damage .

onchocerciasis CAUSES Onchocerciasis is an infectious disease of the eye spread by contact either with an infected person or through the bites of infected blackflies. It will usually occur in clusters within families and the community since it is spread through contact. SYMPTOMS Preventable blindness Skin rashes Lesions Itching Skin depigmentation TREATMENT: A drug has been developed that kills the microfilariae. It alleviates symptoms and reduces transmission. Spraying of blackfly breeding sites Fourth leading cause of preventable blindness

Slide 8:

HOOKWORM 576 MILLION ARE INFECTED WORLDWIDE

hookworm CAUSES: Hookworm is caused by an intestinal parasite SYMPTOMS: Abdominal discomfort Diarrhea Anemia Severe weight loss Loss of appetite Fatigue and weakness TREATMENT: Medication: mebendazole , albendazole , levamisole , and pyrantel A hookworm vaccine is in development.
