Setting the Scene for Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death” As a pre-reading activity for the story, students will investigate their own understanding of the word gothic as well as the scholarly definition of gothic literature using web-based research methods.

Pre-reading Activities : 

Pre-reading Activities STEP ONE In your group, brainstorm and decide upon a definition for the word gothic. You will have 7 minutes to complete this task. The following occupations are required from group members: Time keeper Recorder Board writer ALL should contribute ideas Write your definition on the board with your group number.

Research : 

Research STEP TWO Next you will need to gather definitions of gothic literature from the following websites. Write this definition on the board next to your first definition.

Explanation of Pre-reading activity Schema Theory Schema theory is the theoretical foundation for this activity. Schema theory assumes that each person retains information in the form of rules or scripts, which they use to interpret the world. These bits are known as schema.

Explanation of Pre-reading activity The pre-reading activity is used to access prior knowledge and provide some context for the upcoming reading experience. New knowledge is built upon existing schema. In this situation, I hope that students will restructure their assumptions about the term “goth” to include the elements of gothic literature and the Poe story.

Post-reading Activity : 

Post-reading Activity “The Masque of the Red Death”    Option #1 Research and Report about the Black Plague Option #2 Research and Report about events that include masks such as the Carnival in Venice and Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Option #3 Give a news broadcast of the events at Prince Prospero’s castle. Option #4 Write an argument for and against the Prince’s attempt to avoid the Red Death. Option #5 Sketch the setting.
