News is what is new; it’s what’s happening. Look it up in the dictionary, and you’ll find news described as “a report of recent events or previously unknown information.” But most of the things that happen in the world every day don’t find their way into the newspaper or onto the air in a newscast. NEWS Defined Which is more newsworthy? : Cat saves owner from death Cure for cancer found Which is more newsworthy? NEWS Defined : News has two priorities: it must be current, and it must mean something to people. A story about the environment and a story about the Oscars can both be newsworthy, for different reasons. On the surface at least, the objective of news is to inform the audience. It's the job of all the news media to tell people what's going on in their community - locally, nationally or globally. In this sense, the news media provide a valuable public service. NEWS Defined NEWS Defined : Mitchell Charnley at the University of Minnesota defines news as “tomorrow’s history done up in today's neat package.” Stanley Walker, former city editor of the New York Herald Tribune says, “news is the inexact measure… of the ebb and flow of the times of human aspirations, the ignominy of mankind, the glory of the human race… the best record we have of the incredible NEWS Defined NEWS Defined : record we have of the incredible meanness and the magnificent courage of man.” M. Lyle Spencer, former Dean of Journalism Syracuse University defined news as “any event, idea or opinion that is timely, that interests and affects a large number of persons in the community, and that is capable of being understood by them.” NEWS Defined Major Attributes of News : Timeliness. AKA Immediacy. Reporting about unfolding events distinguishes reporters from historians or playwrights. Today VS Yesterday Proximity. The nearness of the events to the intended readers. Prominence. Refers to both people and places. Osama bin Laden, Mt. Pinatubo, Manny Major Attributes of News Major Attributes of News : Pacquiao, Charice Pempengco, Embassy@The Fort, Paris Hilton Significance. Refers not only to the importance of an event but also how this event will affect the people. Bombings in Mindanao, Obama Invite to GMA, Oil Price Hike, Death of Cory (Knock on wood) Major Attributes of News Major Attributes of News : Oddity. Anything that deviates from the normal course of events is newsworthy. Dog bites man—Normal, Man bites dog—weird and newsworthy. Major Attributes of News News Sources : News Sources TRADITIONAL NON-TRADITIONAL Office of the President & various departments Senate &House of Reps Supreme court and lower courts Constitutional bodies like COMELEC, COA, Civil Service, etc. Local gov’ts like City Hall Military, Stock Market and Central Bank Cause-oriented groups; Bagong Alyansang Makabayan, GABRIELA, VACC, Kilusang Mayo Uno, Piston, Showbiz; internet, blogs, cable-news, etc NEWS GATHERING : The actual coverage of an event Interview with a prominent personality Writing from documents such as speeches, policy statements, research reports and other important papers. NEWS GATHERING Types of News Stories : Action Story – is visual, moving and concrete. It is based on actual coverage or presented as if the writer is an eyewitness in the event. Types of News Stories Types of News Stories : Idea Story– is culled from reports and documents. This typpe of story which is abstract and static, can also be called a substance story. Types of News Stories News Categories : Dependent on the interests of the readers Novelty. This includes anything new, a discovery or an invention. E.g. the robot that exhibits human emotions, the diamond encrusted $6.5M bra Personal Impact. Oil price hikes trigger domino effects/chain reactions. Readers are most often middle-class and they are the most affected. News Categories News Categories : Local News. Reemphasizes proximity. A three ten car pile up on the South Expressway is more interesting for us than the same thing that happened in New York. Money. Stories about the stock market, dollar exchanges, remittances from OFWs, lotto winners, Inflation, new taxes, loss and income News Categories News Categories : Crime and Punishment. Violence sells and there is a need for us to see people punished and get their comeuppance. Subic rape case, Leo Echegaray, Legacy Plans meltdown, murder Sex.
