“Alcoholism” “A chronic disorder marked by excessive and usually compulsive use of alcohol leading to psychological and physical dependence or addiction (Merriam-Webster 2011).” Considered a disease? “Alcoholism is a disease however it is not widely accepted or acknowledged in mainstream society (All About Alcohol, 2004.)” The urge to drink more and more the longer a person is around alcohol greatens over time. This is almost like having a person inside your head telling you to “Have another, what is it going to hurt?” This voice starts to get more forceful the more one drinks and the amount of alcohol needed to calm that voice becomes more.

What it takes for one person to get drunk is not the same for another. Same goes for alcoholism, just because one person became an alcoholic in 6 months does not mean another will in the same amount of time.

“How can we help prevent Alcoholism!” Avoiding drinking at all is the best way to prevent alcoholism. But if you want to drink do it in moderation. Avoid drinking every night even if you are used to having a couple on a daily basis. Try to cut back until your only having a couple every other day and gradually ease off more. Family and Community Help for Alcoholics 1.Build a support group and confront the alcoholic about their problem. 2.Be calm and point out what they are doing to your family with out being abrasive. 3.Never try talking to a alcoholic about their problem while they are drinking, as this can often times send them into an aggressive state.
