INTRODUCTION :

INTRODUCTION ‘Case Study is about KIRANA Vs Super Market. It is about a family who owns four Joy General Stores. The owner of the store is Mr.Prakash Lal Sikri, owns the stores passes the stores to his two sons, Prithvi & Tarun. Tarun took his share in cash and invested in a franchise store. Prithvi took all four stores which is family owned. Tarun’s Grocer Point store started picking up better rates and terms than Bapu. Prithvi got worried about the situation and shows a concern that the Kiranas would finish with the upcoming Super Markets. Bapu suggest Prithvi and makes him understand that the upcoming Super Markets will not ever finish the Kiranas but will lead to a competitive environment. Leena, a worker at Keflo India, customer of Prithvi’s store, also makes him understand about the advantages that Kirana’s provide to their regular customers. She also ask Prithvi to convert one of his store to a company owned store of Keflo and promised him a good designation over there . Prithvi finally shows some interest and discuss same with Bapu and here ends the first part of the Case Study.

Advantages of Kirana Stores from customers’ point of view :

Convenient for customers specially working class living in apartments. Low shelf life products e.g. Butter, milk, bread etc. are need to be fresh so that they can be easily purchased by customers from nearby Kirana’s. The store keeper knows the taste of their regular customers. Kiranas are located at neighbourhood and are easy to reach. They provide credit & free home delivery facilities.

Disadvantages of Kiranas stores from customer’s point of view :

Advantages of supermarket from customer’s point of view :

Advantages of supermarket from customer’s point of view The varieties of products are available. Supermarkets provides their own sales and discount schemes. Exclusive packaging also available for customers in some cases. Customers are free to choose their products. They are not dependable on salesman services. Customers frequently check for discounts and can buy in bulk on various schemes.

Disadvantage of Supermarket from Customer’s Point of View :

Disadvantage of Supermarket from Customer’s Point of View Customer requires extra money and time for their purchase. When guest come suddenly it is difficult to go there and buy a unplanned products. It is not good for low shelf life products like milk, bread, eggs etc. Due to long queues, technology and power failure, customer have to wait.

Advantages of Franchise from Owner’s Point of View :

Advantages of Franchise from Owner’s Point of View The sales of each Franchise is equal to 10 Kirana stores. Franchise would have extended credit. Manufacturer supply goods to franchise at distributor rate, which is 3 – 5% cheaper. Franchise can ask to manufacturer only for those goods / products which they think they can sell. Franchise strategy is mutually benefited.

Disadvantages of Franchise from Owner’s Point of View. :

Disadvantages of Franchise from Owner’s Point of View. The investment cost is very high. Minimum area required should be 6000 sq. ft. Franchise are required to operate their business according to the procedure and restrictions set forth by the franchisor in the agreement. Franchise has to share its profit % with the franchisor.

Advantages of Independent Store from Ownwer’s Point of View :

Advantages of Independent Store from Ownwer’s Point of View Owners are the centralized decision maker. Owner does not share the profit with anyone. These do not required huge staff, computers, A.C and music. In most cases, the independent store owners are sitting on their tenants properties, so their rental cost id next to nothing. The shelves are being paid by the company.

Disadvantages of Independent Store from Owner’s Point :

Disadvantages of Independent Store from Owner’s Point They receive less margin as there are intermediates present in between. Independent store do not get preferential treatment from the companies. Companies pushes their stock, even if they don’t want to sell that product. With the limitation of the space, they keep less variety of products.

Recommendation with respect to the action to be taken by the business family mentioned in the case :

Recommendation with respect to the action to be taken by the business family mentioned in the case We recommend that Prithvi should confined to his family owned business of Kirana stores as he the only owner of the store, but after accepting the offer from Keflo, he would be under the rules and regulations of the company. Moreover, he have to work as per their norms. He would have to share certain percentage of his profit to the company.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Independent/kirana Store :

Advantages and Disadvantages of Independent/kirana Store Advantages: We can buy products on credit in kirana stores because they are in a local market and they know the local residents very well. Kirana stores provide free home delivery. We can buy unplanned products easily. Disadvantages: Chances of expansion is very less. It will become difficult to handle the bulk of customer at the same time due to less man power.
