Natural Resources:

Natural Resources Prepared By KARTIK Class – VIII -L A PRESENTATION ON

NATURAL RESOURCES:

NATURAL RESOURCES LAND NATURAL VEGETATION & WILDLIFE WATER SOIL

LAND RESOURCES:

LAND RESOURCES LAND USE Cultivation of crops Grazing of animals Building houses, roads & airports Mining Manufacturing

FACTORS AFFECTING LAND USE:

FACTORS AFFECTING LAND USE Physical Factors Topography Soil Climate Availability of Water Mineral Resources Economic & Human Factors Population Industrialization Level of development

LAND USE IN SELECTED COUNRIES:

LAND USE IN SELECTED COUNRIES Countries Percentage of Area In Croplands Pasture Forest Other Use Australia 6 56 14 24 Brazil 9 20 66 5 Canada 5 4 39 52 China 10 34 14 42 France 35 21 27 17 India 57 4 22 17 Japan 12 2 67 19 Russia 7 5 44 44 UK 28 46 10 16 USA 21 26 32 21 World 11 26 31 32

3 STAGES OF SOIL FORMATION:

3 STAGES OF SOIL FORMATION STAGE – I Soil formation starts due to weathering of rocks & it develops organic layer. STAGE – II Bacteria & micro-organism act on the remains of plants & other organic material forming humus . STAGE – III Humus helps loose soil grains to stay together & also makes the soil more fertile .

FACTORS AFFECTING SOIL FORMATION:

FACTORS AFFECTING SOIL FORMATION Relief Altitude and slope, determine accumulation of soil Climate Temperature, Rainfall influence rate of weathering & humus Time Determines thickness of soil profile Flora, Fauna & Micro-organism Effect the rate of humus formation Parent Rock Determine colour, texture, chemical properties mineral, content, permeability SOIL

SOIL EROSION – Removal of Soil:

SOIL EROSION – Removal of Soil CAUSES OF SOIL EROSION Deforestation Overgrazing of Land Improper Farming Techniques Wind & Rainfall

METHODS TO CONSERVE SOIL:

METHODS TO CONSERVE SOIL Afforestation Mulching Contour Barriers Rock Dam Terrace Farming Intercropping Contour Ploughing Shelter Belts

HARD FACTS ABOUT WATER:

HARD FACTS ABOUT WATER 71% of earth surface is WATER 97% of earth water is salty in oceans 3% of earth water is fresh water Two third of fresh water is locked in North & South poles Only one third is found in lakes, rivers, streams or aquifers.

IMPORTANCE OF WATER:

IMPORTANCE OF WATER Drinking Industries For formation of Delta Irrigation Power Generation Transportation For Recreational activities like swimming, boating & fishing

FACTOR RESPONSIBLE FOR WATER SCARCITY:

FACTOR RESPONSIBLE FOR WATER SCARCITY Growing Population Commercialization of Agriculture Variation in Seasonal & Annual Precipitation Industrialization & Urbanization Over-utilization & mis -utilization of water Pollution

METHODS TO CONSERVE WATER:

METHODS TO CONSERVE WATER Using Rain Water Harvesting Using Drip Irrigation Afforestation By Making check Dams By saving water in kitchen, bathroom By Recycling of water in industries

Natural Vegetation & Wildlife:

Natural Vegetation & Wildlife Vegetation supports functions of biosphere It regulates flow of water, carbon & nitrogen Vegetation affects soil properties. Vegetation is important in use of fossil fuels as energy source Source of oxygen in atmosphere

Natural Vegetation & Wildlife:

Natural Vegetation & Wildlife Wildlife includes animals, birds, insects & aquatic life. They give us milk, meat, hides, wool. Insects like bees give honey. Insects help in pollination of flowers. Birds like vulture decompose dead livestock & cleans environment.
