From this point forward, this country was known as the thirteen colonies and were governed individually. In 1787, the constitutional convention met to write a constitution for our country. In 1789, the U.S. Constitution was finalized and George Washington was elected the first president of the Unites States.Three Branches of Government: Three Branches of GovernmentLegislative Branch: Legislative Branch Made up of Congress and other agencies. The House of Representatives The Senate Makes up the laws for the country. Comes up with a bill that will be approved by the president and later made into laws.The Executive Branch: The Executive Branch Made up of the President, Vice President, and other members of the cabinet. President: Leader of the country and commands the military. Vice President: President of the Senate and becomes President if the President can no longer do his job. Departments: Heads advise the President on issues and help carry out policies. Independent agencies: Help carry out policy or provide special services. Makes sure the laws are obeyed.
