Introduction In Senegal, the fishing sector remains the main economic resource and a major source for foreign exchange. With it’s importance this sector still faces challenges as numerous fishermen go missing on daily basis in the open sea while fishing. T his is mostly as a result of turbulent storms or sea waves … With this in mind it would be very helpful to the fishermen if they could have connected pirogue capable of alerting and prompting for help in time of open sea related dangers or when something else goes wrong. Reason why I decided for my final project to propose a connected pirogue inspired by my IoT course and connectedBoat application. 3

IoT Solution A sensor is placed on the pirogue to monitor water ( sea) levels, and track its location in almost real time It can also send alerts to the controlling station if the pirogue leaves a specified zone or has a very high water pressure level or if water levels go beyond a certain (pre-configured) range. Benefits Quick reaction to emergency cases Localise missing pirogue More lives saved and less concerns about fishermen’s family 5

Conclusion We live in an increasingly connected world where the Internet of Things is now subtly improving our lives in many ways. Simply put, the Internet of things is the networking of sensors and devices that monitor, collect, and exchange data via cloud-based applications using cellular, satellit , and WiFi communications. In my IoT solution, these data are then leveraged to help fishermen improve situational awareness, access information remotely, make better decisions, and prevent damage or loss This IoT solution can also be used by other fishermen in West Africa and in other countries where fishermen make use of pirogue. 12
