In our last chapter, “In the Beginning,” we met our sweet, nature-loving foundress Genesis Theophilus. She made friends with Samantha Ottomas, got promotions, married Peter Raha and got a house with walls. And we left with a fire breaking out on Genesis and Peter’s wedding night. Slide 3: Genesis screamed. “Peter! Call the fire department! AAAAH!” “What?! What’s going on in there?” “Call the fire department!” Genesis repeated, coughing, trying not to panic and failing miserably. Slide 4: “Thanks for saving our lives, Firefighter-with-my-face!”“Be more careful next time, Cofounder-with-my-face!” Slide 5: “Well, at least nothing was too badly damaged,” Peter sighed. “And this can be…um…Cajun.” Slide 6: “Well, that was an exciting way to welcome the new house! Literal housewarming!” Genesis laughed at her joke. “I’m just glad we didn’t burn the place down.” “Oh, me too. I love our new house, it’s so nice.” “Having a roof is nice indeed.” “And walls. Don’t forget walls.” Slide 7: “The only thing I don’t like about that house is that there isn’t a nursery yet.” “Oh. Well, Jen, I really don’t think that’ll be a problem,” Peter chuckled. “What do you mean? Of course we need a nursery, silly.” “Jen, the thing is, I’m not really a family type.” Slide 8: The world seemed to be crashing around Genesis’s ears. “But, Peter, I’ve always wanted to be a mother. Couples are supposed to have children, so they can be raised properly, in love and faith and everything!” Slide 9: “Don’t be difficult, Jen,” Peter sighed. “I’m not being difficult! I just…” Genesis felt like she wanted to cry. Slide 10: Peter muttered something to himself, smiled, and said, “Don’t be upset. I just meant we’re too poor to raise a child. Right now, we can’t afford a nursery or a crib or diapers or anything.” “Oh. That makes sense,” Genesis said, beginning to feel better. “I promise, when we can afford it, we will have children.” “Promise?” “I promise.” Slide 11: “Come on, Jen, it’s our wedding night. Let’s make the most of it,” Peter said sweetly. Slide 12: And Genesis melted at his smile, not thinking of money or promises. Slide 13: Sleep claimed Genesis for a long while. What with her wedding, the fire, and Peter’s promise about their future, she was exhausted. Slide 14: She slept till noon on that Saturday. Finally the sun streaming through the windows woke her up. She left the room, not even bothering to change out of her pajamas. Slide 15: “Morning, honey!” “Afternoon.” “Right. What have you been doing all morning?” “Waiting for you to get up.” “Aw, you’re so sweet,” Genesis giggled. Slide 16: “Honey, do you think you could clean the counter?” Peter asked suddenly. “Um, I’m eating? Why don’t you, you’re all done.” “I’m not a very clean person. You are. You slept till noon today, after all.” “So? And asking a woman to clean is terribly stereotypical,” Genesis asked, rather concerned and a tiny bit annoyed. “Come on, Jen, please?” “Well…alright. After I’m done eating.” Slide 17: “So, Peter, do you have work today?” “No.” “Oh, goody, we can spend the whole day together! Well, what’s left of it,” she laughed. “What do you do, by the way?” “Oh. Well, I’m in the Criminal career track.” “The what?!” Slide 18: “Jen, don’t worry. We don’t do anything bad. It was the only job I could get, and it pays a lot better than your job,” Peter said. Genesis remembered his promise of children when they had more money, so she smiled and said, “Oh, okay.” Slide 19: But she was still worried. “You’ll be careful, right?” “I’ll be fine,” he said, starting to sound annoyed. “I was only asking,” she said quietly. “Don’t worry,” he assured her. Slide 20: Genesis scrubbed the counter as Peter took another bowl of chili con carne. Slide 21: As she washed the dishes, she thought, Well, I am neater than he is. And I slept till noon, so he could probably use a little rest. We’ll have money soon, she reassured herself, and then we can have a baby. She glowed at the thought. Slide 22: That evening, Genesis and Peter played with their new chess set. Peter moved a piece and took one of Genesis’s pawns. Slide 23: Genesis watched him and examined the board. He was good. Slide 24: She made a face. “You’re too good. I can’t beat you!” “Right you are.” Genesis wasn’t sure if he was serious or not, but she giggled anyway. Slide 25: Genesis stared at the board and Peter stared at her. “You know, Jen, I think you need a job.” “I already have a job, silly,” Genesis laughed. “I mean a new job. A better job.” Slide 26: “Better?” Genesis asked. “Well, you remember my promise. If you get a higher-paying job, we’ll have more income. And we can have the baby sooner,” Peter said. Genesis was silent, and moved a piece apprehensively. Peter had a point, but she loved her teaching job. She didn’t want to leave the students and the faculty, especially not her friend Samantha. Slide 27: “You could go to the employment office in the morning,” Peter said, misinterpreting her silence. “But you’ll have to call yourself Jennifer Theophilus, not Genesis.” “Why on earth would I do that?” Genesis asked, startled. “Well, statistics show that employers are more willing to hire people with common names. Something about familiarity. And we need this new job, right?” “Right,” Genesis said uneasily. But her desire for a baby was already assuaging her unease. Slide 28: He went to her and caressed her face. “I know you love your job, Jen, but we really need the money,” he said softly. “I know,” she replied, already starting to agree with him. “You want kids, right?” “More than anything!” “So…?” “I’ll go in the morning.” “Good.” Slide 29: Genesis harvested her tomatoes later that night. It was rather bittersweet. She was glad that her tomatoes were done, and her hard work had paid off. But Peter had made it plain that seeds for new plants was a luxury. Genesis was willing to put off her garden for a child. At times she acted far more like a Family Sim than a Knowledge Sim. Slide 30: In the morning, her unease returned. “Ready to get up and at ‘em, Jen?” Peter asked. “I suppose so.” “I’ll help you get changed for your interview.” Slide 31: A little while later, Peter said, “You look great, Jen. Very professional.” Slide 32: “I don’t understand why I have to get all dressed up for this,” Genesis said behind a mask of make-up. “Shouldn’t I be myself?” “You dress to impress, Jen. And this impresses.” Slide 33: “It feels dishonest.” “Well, I think you look great.” “I don’t.” Slide 34: “Are you going or not?” Peter said, turning heel. “I’ll be back soon,” Genesis said, knowing he no longer wished to discuss the matter. “You’re Jennifer, remember!” he called after her. Slide 35: She sat in the waiting room of the employment office in Bluewater Village. People hustled and bustled all around her. She still felt that her make-up and her new clothes were lies. Genesis wasn’t Jennifer, who wore a mask of make-up and deception instead of a face. Slide 36: This isn’t me, Genesis thought. But she soothed herself. It’ll be worth it. You’ll see. You can go back to Winding Vines later. And once you look in your child’s eyes, you’ll see, it’ll all be worth it. Slide 37: It was her turn. She walked into the office nervously. Slide 38: “Good morning, ma’am,” the woman inside said to her. “Good morning,” Genesis said quietly. Slide 39: “My name is Tasha Young. It’s my pleasure to help you today at the Bluewater Employment Office. May I take your name?” Slide 40: She felt wrong and unclean, and choked out, “J-Jennifer Theophilus,” very quietly. It felt like a curse on her tongue. Slide 41: “Alright, Jennifer, let me see what I can find in my database for you.” Slide 42: “We have a lot of positions available. You’re lucky.” Tasha smiled at Genesis. “Now, so I can find an ideal job for you, I’m going to ask you what you like to do.” Slide 43: “Oh, no, I’m just looking for something high-paying,” Genesis said quickly, imagining a nursery in the near future. “But you may not be happy.” “It doesn’t matter.” Tasha fixed her with an odd look. “You’re quite sure?” “Yes.” Slide 44: “Well, a good one here is a secretary for an important law firm that just opened a branch here in Bluewater. It’s quite high-paying.” “I’ll take it.” “Are you sure?” No. “Yes.” “I’m glad to have serviced you today. Have a nice day.” “You, too.” And she left as fast as she could. Slide 45: “So, did you get a job?” “Yes, Peter, I did. I didn’t want to, but I did.” “Good.” Slide 46: “So, can we have a baby now?” “Is that all you ever think about? No, we don’t have enough money. It’ll take a while for us to be ready.” Slide 47: “Look, Peter, I really, really want to have a child…” “Look, Jen, I know. Be patient, okay?” His voice had an edge, and it scared her. “Okay.” Slide 48: The phone rang the next morning, and Genesis went to answer it.” “Hello?” “Hi, hun!” Samantha Ottomas’s familiar voice crackled over the line. “I was just checking that you haven’t been abducted by aliens or somethin’.” “Hi, Samantha! Me? I’m fine.” “Hey, listen, hun, can I come over?” “Sure! Well…are you able to travel? I mean, being in your condition and all.” “Don’t worry about me. I’ll be over there soon.” Slide 49: “Hi, Samantha!” “Hiya, Genesis. Listen, I heard you quit from Winding Vines! It can’t be true, you love teaching.” Slide 50: “It’s true, Samantha.” “What? Why?” “Well, I got married and I really want to have kids. But my husband Peter says we don’t have enough money to raise a baby.” “What?! My husband and I aren’t rich, and look at us!” Slide 51: “Anyway, Peter promised that if we got enough money, we could have a baby. So I got a better job. I’m a secretary at a law firm.” “Are you happy?” “Not as happy as I was at Winding Vines,” Genesis admitted. “So come back!” “I will. Once I have the baby and we have enough money to raise him or her. It’s my dearest wish--” “And you’ll do anything to make it come true?” Samantha sighed. “I know what it feels like.” Slide 52: “Genesis, when I was your age, I wanted kids too. When I married my husband, he didn’t want any. I didn’t sit around and do whatever he told me to. I didn’t let him set ultimatums. And you can’t let Peter do that to you.” “We’re different, Samantha. We have a point, we’re really poor. I don’t want to raise a child in poverty.” Slide 53: Genesis changed the subject abruptly. “How are you? How are the twins?” “Fine. Just fine.” “I can’t wait to be pregnant. It must feel…” “Yes. Like you’re glowing. Pregnancy glow. It makes up for the mood swings and weird cravings.” Samantha sighed happily. Slide 54: Genesis and Peter worked and worked. They paid the bills and were earning money. Slide 55: In their busy schedule, some household chores went unnoticed. Slide 56: Genesis was doing quite well at her job. She was the big boss’s personal assistant. It was very busy, but worth it. It paid very well. The Theophiluses were saving a lot and spending very little. Slide 57: Some might say that Genesis was overworking herself. But she was willing to do anything to make her dream come true. Slide 58: “Mmph…babies…wh…why is there food on my face?” Slide 59: Somewhere in their busy schedules, Genesis and Peter still found time to sleep. And that is where I’ll leave you today. Next, will Genesis’s hard work pay off? Will the couple welcome a third Theophilus? Or will it just be paradise lost? You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
