He decides to set out to find his fortune, but he has many cold, lonely days ahead of him before he eventually finds the love that he has always been looking for.

Why teaching reading? People reads for two main reasons: For pleasure and for information. 2

Presentación de PowerPoint:

Teaching reading help children to understand the world. 01 03 02 04 I t is important that children have good experiences reading in English as well as in their mother language. Bedtime stories at home are very useful to get the child interested on lecture. R eading for pleasure Reading don't look exclusively for information or pleasure but also for inspiration and it helps us to stimulate language skills. R eading as a tool to open different doors Read a book for information is like read a menu of a restaurant. And if you use a book which has interesting topics for the students, they are going to read also for pleasure. R eading for information Reading help children adquire new lexic and comphrend social contexts in which the child lives. Develop cognitive and social skills

What is teaching reading? Teaching reading is a set of skills that involves making sense and deriving meaning form the printed world. 3

Presentación de PowerPoint:

R eading or Decoding? Reading is not only known how to pronouncing… Understanding the meaning of the text, it involves high-order thinking skills R eading is … English has almost 40 sounds, but only 26 alphabetic symbols. That causes problems to speakers of languages which have one-to-one sound letter correspondence (as Spanish and Russian). For example: We must teach children to derive meaning as well as analyze and synthetize the information they read if we want them to really read. Meaning Relate the written symbols whit the sounds . What factors to consider when teaching reading? 4

Presentación de PowerPoint:

Strategies like questioning, selecting key words, hypothesizing and constructing meaning. Teachers must take advantage of student's skills like knowledge of text structure, phonemes and nouns. Is easier for children to learn decoding in English if they had already learned how to read in their mother language because it helps understand the concept of printed symbols. D ecoding Child’s linguistic knowledge of the target language Strategies or techniques the child uses to tackle the text C hild’s background knowledge Vision problems If you notice symptoms of poor vision in your student, encourage parents and child to get glasses. Its more difficult to read in a foreign language than in the mother language.

How to teach reading ? 5

Presentación de PowerPoint:

P honetic -Based Instruction Teach children that printed letters represent speech sounds heard in words. Consist on teaching the basic phonic rules for made easier the decoding. The most important think about PB instruction is that you can't isolate sounds from meaning, for this approach, children must use the word in their oral language before to sound or read it. You must always keep the meaning on focus. Phonic-based instruction is teaching children that letters can be put together to form words. But is not only concerned about words.

Presentación de PowerPoint:

Litterature -Based Approach Develop literacy skills within the context of literature. Why to promote the usage of authentic story books: 1. Develop of the child as an intellectual and creative being. 2. Authentic English language and culture contained in the book . 3. Help children to develop a host of cognitive and social skills.

What techniques or activities to use to teach pronunciation? 6

Presentación de PowerPoint:

Teacher introduce sound and letter associated with nouns. For example: /m/ - M – Monkey. First, introduce consonant sounds and once children are familiar, introduce short vowel sounds as /a/ as in apple. Finally, teach them how to blend sounds together (CVC). For example: b-a-t. And use images to identify the meaning. Phonics Use predictable stories that have repetitive phrases and predictable language. They contain illustrations to support and sentences. P redictable stories and pattern books. Children must recognize sight words without having to decode the letters. For example sight words: The, All, And, I. For example, we must put children to read a text and tell them to search and encounter how many times appear the sight word (the) on the text, Sight words

Presentación de PowerPoint:

C hildren names can be sight words. Write and show the children names and made the kids say it aloud. N ames F ull the classroom with signs, labels and billboards, wordlists and vocabulary that children are learning. Use also authentic literature like storybooks, non-fiction titles, calendars and packages of products. P rint -rich environment S tations of places within the classroom where the children can work alone, in pairs or small groups. For example: An airline travel station where kids will learn vocabulary and do role plays L earning centers

Presentación de PowerPoint:

Language experience approach Own words Questioning techniques Its a meaningful and pleasurable group experience. Students participate in simple group activities like drinking juice, going to the backyard and explain what happened in their own words. The teacher writes what the students said. The teacher make questions for checking comprehension of the readings. Questions are also strategies which help the students to develop their skills. Questions could be put before the readings to pique children interest and after the readings for verify comprehension. The teacher ask each student what words they want to know and then, the teacher teach them those words. The students will have an extra motivation because they proposed those words
