Premium member Presentation Transcript Slide 2: Theo’s Folding Bicycle A green idea Slide 3: Theo had a dream Slide 4: He wanted a folding bicycle Slide 5: But none of the ones online satisfied his desires. He decided to make his own. Unsatisfactory bikes Slide 6: He wanted a bike that did not simply fold down the middle. Most bikes use small tires for compactness, but Theo wanted full-size tires. Slide 7: The folding bikes on the market seemed to lack creativity, except for the non-functional ones… Slide 8: Theo learned a lot from studying manufacturers such as Dahon and Montague, but he sought to build upon what he found rather than copy it Slide 9: There were already more than enough Dahon “imitators” on the market… Slide 10: Amiiva A.S. bikes Amxma Asama Slide 11: Maya Bazooka Be.bike Beixo Slide 12: Bernds Breezer Brompton Dibar Slide 13: Downtube Dynamic Flamingo IXI Slide 14: Jee Ann Liyang Melon Oyama Slide 15: Just to name a few… Slide 16: Theo entered Cornell Slide 17: Handshake action He met Lance Collins, Dean of the College of Engineering Slide 18: Theo began describing his dream to the dean, who hung on to every word with great interest and admiration I am very interested and admire Theo Slide 19: The dean, confident in Theo’s abilities, recommended he contact Professor Ruina about doing a project I am confident in your abilities. I recommend you contact Professor Ruina. That got the ball rolling Slide 20: So he did Andy Ruina Professor of Mechanics Slide 21: The professor, also confident in Theo’s abilities, agreed to be his faculty mentor I am also confident in your abilities. I will be your faculty mentor for this project. Slide 22: Go learn to the bike shop 3 days a week to learn more Slide 23: Non-Profit Bicycle Repair Shop Dude, this is the third time this week you have been here Slide 24: Before Beginning… I thought bicycles were simple Slide 25: I soon learned that was not true Slide 26: And get machine shop training so that you can actually build your bike Slide 27: So this is what machine shop training is like… Slide 28: Look, I’m gonna fund this project. It’s a great idea, and here’s why: Slide 29: It’s environmentally friendly Slide 30: Theo has the backing of a full time university professor Theo has the backing of a full-time professor who is an expert in robotics and bicycles Slide 31: I mean, why not help this kid’s dream come true? It only takes a few bucks. Slide 32: Maybe soon I’ll find his bike on the market and know I contributed to this success Slide 33: In fact, I’d like to see more kids out there inventing and innovating useful things Slide 34: He’s only a freshman and he initiated this independent project Slide 35: 1. 2. 4. 3. 5.
