Premium member Presentation Transcript Chapter 7 : Chapter 7 Communicating Nonverbally Nonverbal Codes : Nonverbal Codes Kinesics: body movements Vocalics: vocal intonation, accents, etc. Haptics: touch (placement, duration, strength) Proxemics: distance Chronemics: organization, use, and understanding of time Slide 3: Physical appearance: dress, hair, body type, etc Changeable vs. un-changeable Salience Artifacts: personal possessions displayed to others Environment: structure of physical surroundings Slide 4: Which of these codes do you consciously choose? Which ones seem “unconscious”? Slide 5: We always need to account for race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and other forces that influence our choices, others’ expectations of, and “appropriateness” of our communication. Slide 6: Remember to not succumb to dominant discourses of how we should think about these factors! Use those wonderful critical minds to question stereotypes, generalizations, and assumptions we often make.
