I found chapter 3 to be very interesting and informative. Perceiving others is something that we all do on a regular basis and oftentimes do not even realize we are doing it. Think about it, when you see somebody who looks a little out of the norm, what do you think? You may feel uncomfortable around this person even though you have no idea who they are or what they are like. I think it's difficult to not judge a book by its cover but it's something that we all should work on. Some people admire traits in others that they have in themselves but at the same time, some may be jealous of traits that others have that they do not possess. I believe this ties in with the halo and horn effect because we construct positive or negative Gestalts.

It is really hard to know that we have to be perceived a different way in our society. Chapter 4 makes note that we have to be salient and devour what the norms in our society. Chapter 4 is saying that each of us has a certain part to play in our society and we have to play these roles. If not, we will be perceived in a different way that might make us an out cast. For example, everyone believes that going to college is beneficial to everyone, but that is not the case right out of high school. Some people are perceived different because they do not go to college right away. And that is perception is all about. Liza A

I enjoyed chapter 3 because it shows a our who process from sight to judgment. Like we see something and we automatically make certain assumptions about what we are looking at. It's amazing how many steps there are in this, and in reality this only takes a few seconds. Makes me think much more about the steps every time I see something or somebody new.

Ch. 3: Perceiving Others Part 1 (p. 79-93)

Perception as a process… :

Perception as a process… What are the general steps we take to develop our perceptions of others? Selecting information Organizing the information Interpreting the organized information

Step 1: Selecting :

Step 1: Selecting We choose what we attend to what we want to look at, focus on, etc. verbal and non-verbal communication We also rely on cultural, gender, and societal norms and expectations of what to attend to

Slide 8:

Salience: the degree to which we attend to certain information we perceive How much/less you pay attention to certain aspects

Slide 9:

What are the conditions that encourage us to view aspects of interpersonal communication as salient?

Step 2: Organizing :

Step 2: Organizing We organize the information we select based on “what makes sense” to us as individuals Again, this is informed by socialized structures like culture, gender roles, and experience Patterns of organization are different for everyone

Slide 11:

When we organize what we select into a chronological order, we punctuate. Recognize how culturally based this concept is…and therefore exclusionary What about cultures where time is not thought of as something linear? Can there even be a first, second, third and so on?

Slide 12:

Differences in selection, organization, and punctuation can lead to conflict How can we seriously help to avoid frustration and anger due to differences in these?

Slide 13:

Recognizing others have different perspectives Respecting those differences and truly appreciating them just as much as you privilege your own

Step 3: Interpreting Information :

Step 3: Interpreting Information Assigning meanings to processes of steps 1 and 2 How do we develop “rubrics” of interpretation/evaluation?

Slide 15:

How would you explain each of the following… Schema/schemata Attributions Fundamental attribution error Self-serving bias

Slide 16:

Experiencing Uncertainty Who is “Pat”? What is uncertainty reduction theory? Can you think of personal examples?

Influences on Perception :

Influences on Perception Perceptions about ourselves, perceptions about others Culture Age Gender “Lifestyle”

Slide 18:

How would you evaluate the ingroup/outgroup notion for its accuracy, value, and relevance?

Slide 19:

Are there inherent gender differences in communication? According to the text book, what did various researchers and studies find? To what extent to you agree or disagree?
