Is abortion truly a choice? :

Is abortion truly a choice? By Joaquin P Noyola

Outline :

Outline Background Explanation of Claim What constitutes a free choice? Why do women have abortions? What can we conclude? What can we do?

Background :

Background Abortion is “the act of removing a human embryo or fetus from the uterus of a pregnant woman prior to the completion of the full term of pregnancy” (Rich). A Pro-Choice person is someone who favors abortion in all cases A Pro-Life person is someone who opposes abortion in all cases

Explanation of Claim :

Explanation of Claim Pro-Choice people argue that abortion should be a woman’s private decision, exclusively Women usually do not decide to have an abortion on their own, but instead they are forced to have it by life circumstances beyond their control Therefore, those who truly believe in “freedom of choice” should not favor abortion, but instead promote laws that inform, help, and protect women who are being pressured in to having abortions.

What constitutes a free choice? :

What constitutes a free choice? “Freedom of choice” refers to the ability to decide what one wants without any outside constraints or pressures If there are any outside constraints or pressures affecting one’s decision, then there that decision is not a free choice

What can we conclude? :

What can we conclude? The survey concludes that women usually have abortions due to “multiple, diverse and interrelated reasons.” Using all the data from the survey, one can expect that only about 0.49% of women freely choose to have an abortion NOTE: Reasons such as “have completed my childbearing,” “not ready for a(nother) child,” and “don’t feel mature enough to raise a(nother child)” were not taken to be external factors.

What can we conclude? :

What can we conclude? Therefore, not only are most women pressured one way or another to have an abortion, but they are often pushed to such decision by multiple factors. In other words, even if a woman manages to eliminate one factor, there will still be others.

What can we do? :

What can we do? Instead of promoting abortion, we could: Promote programs that provide financial assistance for pregnant women in financial need Support policies that provide a friendly environment for pregnant students and workers Support stricter child support laws Promote counseling programs
