PaLibraries LibGuides Project: 

PaLibraries LibGuides Project Every trainer and participant who attends a workshop will have ADMIN status. Access to LibGuides is free to trained participants until September 1, 2012. All LibGuides can be backed up so that the content can be saved. All URLs will begin with http://palibraries.libguides.com/ . Within LibGuides, you have the ability to share each other’s LibGuides content with permission of the author.

Creating Accounts/My Profile: 

Creating Accounts/My Profile STEP 1: Login to http://palibraries.libguides.com/admin.php use the password “palibraries.” Go to “Edit My Account” and change your password to something you will remember. Don’t forget it. STEP 2: Click on “Customize Your Profile” Fill in info and upload a photo from your computer if you have one. Say Cheese! For more info on account and editor types, click here .

This initial page is called HOME as indicated by the tab. Each new page you create within this guide will have a tab title that you give it. Default is three columns, but this can be changed now or later Status is “unpublished” until “published” or made “private”(Guide Settings-Change guide info) Your profile will automatically show on each page FAQs on LibGuides at http://guidefaq.com .

Box 4: MultiMedia - Embedded Media Give the box a name like “Recommended YouTube” and CREATE BOX . Now open another Internet browser page and search YouTube for a video to add. Click on the SHARE , then EMBED. Copy the html code (not the URL). Go back to LibGuides and paste in the code and save. Need more help? Box 5: Multimedia – RSS Feeds Give the box a name like “Latest news on…” and CREATE BOX . Go to the box you just created, click on ADD TEXT and add a short description if needed. In another browser, search or create a feed (i.e., Google News). Right click on the RSS icon and copy the URL. Create an Advanced News Search Go to http://news.google.com/ and set up your search. Run the search to be sure it gets the results you are looking for.

Select your catalog vendor tab from Library Catalog Searches . Read the directions. ADD NEW BOX - RICH TEXT/DYNAMIC CONTENT/SCRIPTS The PROCESS – You will be copying some html code, Editing the code to add your catalog location info., and Pasting it into the LibGuides RICH TEXT edit box. Really, you can do this!

Box 6 – Creating a Link to Your Online Catalog STEP 2- Editing the Code Open a new browser and go to your online catalog to locate your domain and site or profile number. Domain is after http:// For example: Destiny.easdpa.org Site number appears at the bottom of the screen when you mouse-over the name of your school from the Destiny list of district schools (Directions may differ if you have other systems. Read your directions.) For example, in Destiny the site number is likely a 3 digit number.

Back in LibGuides, click on ADD TEXT in the box you just created. Click the PLAIN TEXT EDITOR tab. Paste in the code. Replace the domain name and site or profile number wherever it appears (For Destiny- replace one site number and 6 domain names.) Save and refresh the page. Destiny should look like this:

Copy code into word 2. At the beginning of the code replace the site id according to the instructions at the libguide site 3. Determine your catalog string then 4. Find on the ribbon at the top of word the Replace function Then  type domain in the top box and  in the replace box  type the catalog name Hit the command which is greyed out here replace all and you will now have the correct code 5. Use the save as function to save the file as a txt file not a word file 6. Copy the text from this file and you are done and have a working widget. For more detailed explanation, see this Google Doc

Creating Search Boxes to your Online Databases Go to Creating Search Boxes to create custom search boxes with their graphics for databases to which your library subscribes such as Gale, EBSCO, etc. You can also make a direct link to a POWER Library database, but it will only work within your library. From home, library users must be directed to the public library’s page where they type in their patron barcode number to use POWER Library databases.

Box 7 – Creating a Poll or Survey The “User Feedback” has predefined Q & A’s about the usefulness of the info. on the LibGuide. Results are emailed to the LibGuide owner. The “Interactive Poll” is best for a simple poll on a topic and allows you to create your own Q and A’s and view the results in Admin mode. Our license does not include the “Survey” choice . ADD NEW BOX – USER INPUT BOXES – USER FEEDBACK

This is automatically created. You do not need to type in Q’s and A’s. They are predefined. Feedback is emailed to the LIbGuides owner. If you don’t want the email, create your own feedback poll with a “Interactive Poll” box. Results are viewed online in Admin.

Creating Sub Pages in a LibGuide Within the LibGuide you created: Click on ADD/EDIT PAGES (orange command bar) Select ADD/REUSE PAGES . Enter a short title & description Under POSITION , select the page to “Add Under” Click CREATE PAGE. Check out the Digital Collection Development LibGuide

Adding Tags to a LibGuide: 

Adding Tags to a LibGuide Within the LibGuide you created: Click on GUIDE SETTINGS (orange command bar) and select CHANGE GUIDE INFO Type your tags separating each with a comma, or click any existing tag to assign it to this guide. On the “home” LibGuides page, you can then search by tags.

Locating “Reusable Content”: 

Locating “Reusable Content” Go to : MY ADMIN COMMUNITY tab Select Best Of LibGuides: http://bestof.libguides.com In the “Browse by Subject” box, select “Resource Collections” Select “How Stuff Works” the “How Stuff Works-Animal Guide” Scroll to bottom and folllow “How to Grab This Guide For Your LibGuides System.” LibGuides allows you to share the Guides you create and copy from others with permission! You can also grab a box from a page and insert it in another guide.

“Publishing” your LibGuide: 

“Publishing” your LibGuide On the orange Command Bar, click on GUIDE SETTINGS . Select CHANGE GUIDE INFORMATION . Under “Guide Publication Status” select “Published” and save.

Creating a “Friendly” URL On the orange Command Bar, click on GUIDE SETTINGS . Select CHANGE GUIDE INFORMATION . Create your friendly URL and save.

“Backing Up” your LibGuide: 

“Backing Up” your LibGuide On the orange Command Bar, click on CREATE BACKUP . This will save all pages associated with the LibGuide that is open. The file is one continuous file for all pages. This preserves your work---just in case!

Accessing your LibGuide Stats You want to exit edit mode to see the tab with statistics across the top.  If you are in edit mode, just link onto Dashboard
