The Development Of The Apple iPad Josie Culshaw, 10994336

Slide 2:

In 2010, Apple produced a revolutionary PC tablet, the iPad. On the 27 th January 2010, Steve Jobs, Apple’s founder, announced a product that would change the way people view technology and the future of the internet. The iPad. The 13.4mm thin PC tablet was one of the first of its kind on the market and it caused a media frenzy as well as catching many of Apple’s main rivals off guard. The device allows users to browse the internet, access over 350,000 apps, write documents, read emails and much more .

The Uses Of The iPad In Education. Since its release, the iPad has become increasingly popular with educational establishments . The device creates a new way of learning for students which many of them find much more engaging and enjoyable rather than more conventional methods. The app store offers thousands of apps which aid education in several areas including web research, art-work, music and media. An example of an app is the ‘Shakespeare App’ developed by Ivor Zhadanov. It includes full works of Shakespeare and is completely free. Apps like this are convenient as they compile useful literature and are also cost effective as they reduce the need to buy several manuscripts. Here is a self-made video clip of the use of the ‘Nasa App’, an example of another useful educational app, on the 1 st generation iPad. www.appolicious.com I have collected information about the average prices of Apps for several categories. The results show that educational apps are some of the cheapest apps available out of my selected categories. These results suggest that educational apps are more affordable and therefore more people will purchase and use them to aid education. Book and Reference apps prices are also quite affordable and are also known for their educational uses.

The Profitability of The iPad The iPad has proven to be quite profitable for Apple, equating to 17% of their yearly sales in 2010 as the adjacent graph shows. The graph also shows that iPad sales are only 3% behind Apple Mac sales (Apple’s laptop computer range) suggesting that some are choosing tablet PCs rather than more traditional laptops. Contrary to PC World’s reports, if Apple sell an iPad unit for $499, they make a 42.9% profit margin . This suggests that the costs of the individual parts (supplied by companies such as LG) and the labour costs by manufacturers Foxconn must be relatively cheap per unit , allowing Apple to make a large profit.

Slide 5:

Introduction of the iPad 2 Apple unveiled their new generation tab, the iPad 2 on March 2 nd 2011. It was available to buy from March 11 th . The upgraded tablet has many more benefits including a new A5 dual core processor that runs up to almost twice as fast as the old iPad processor. It has the benefit of cameras on the front and back of the device and is much thinner at only 8.8mm. According to the Daily Telegraph, by March 14 th , the iPad 2 was sold out with already an estimated 450,000 units sold. This is compared to only 300,000 original iPad sales in the previous year. The graph to the right shows the cost of the iPad 2 in dollars in each country. Taking exchange rates into account, Apple are making healthy profits on the devices with countries like Norway selling units for $762. The prices , however, are still cheaper than the 1 st gen iPad in the previous year. In the UK the most basic iPad 2 costs £399 which is £30 cheaper than the iPad in 2010 . The reduction in price has led to many new apple buyers . The Daily Telegraph reported almost 70% of surveyed buyers were new to the iPad. It could be suggested that the cheaper price has made it available to all rather than just the well-off consumers www.appleipadreviews.info.com

The iPad and the iPad 2 have created a revolution in the world of technology. Surveys have shown people are choosing iPad tablets over PCs AND other tablet brands. With an estimated 14 million iPad users worldwide, the product and Apple are still growing with the use of their products growing too. The below graph shows this. 21% of owners are using their iPad over 3 hours a day supporting evidence of the products use in business and education as well as recreational use.
