One of the oldest concentration camps in the Nazi system, it held more than 238,000 prisoners . During its 8 years of existence, 43,000 were killed. 4 days latter British troops liberated Bergen-Belsen, where they found 13,000 corpses (bodies) and 58,000 prisoners mostly Jews were still alive but in critical condition. Tragically, many former prisoners, after months of malnourishment, overate to the point of death. Making their way over mountains and under cover to Europe's coasts ,the Jewish families got into unstable ships . Discovery meant arrest. Despite the risks, 64 ships delivered over 70,000 people to Palestine beaches. 50,000 were stopped and taken to British detention camps on the island of Cyprus.
