Introducing Organizing Ideas The focus of today’s minilesson is on organizing ideas because ideas are POWER! The more ideas we can organize, the more POWER we have in our writing! We can organize our ideas by: Brainstorm main topic ideas Make clusters for related ideas Talking with your classmates and your teacher

Demonstrating Organizing Ideas Step One: Brainstorm main t opic ideas Make a list of topic ideas that you have prior knowledge about and/or that you are passionate about! Examples: A meaningful life 3. Being healthy The perfect vacation 4. Relationships What are you passionate about?

Demonstrating Organizing Ideas Step Two: Choose the topic that your are the most passionate about and create a cluster of related ideas Example main topic : A meaningful life A Meaningful Life Work $ Travel Knowledge Family Children Religion Friends Spouse School

Demonstrating Organizing Ideas Step Three: Review what you have learned about your main topic and discuss those ideas with your classmates and teacher. What are the best ideas to write about? Choose the three best ideas that relate to your main topic. Example main topic: A meaningful life Best related ideas: Knowledge Family Work

Guide Practice:

Guide Practice Step Four: Students form small groups of three or four classmates: Each student writes one sentence about each idea related to their main topic. Why is each idea important to your main topic? Example main topic: A meaningful life Idea 1 (Knowledge): Gaining knowledge is important to building a meaningful life because the more we know about the world, the more we know about ourselves. Idea 2 (Family): Having a family is important to building a meaningful life because family teaches us how to love unconditionally. Idea 3 (Work): Our work is important to building a meaningful life because our contributions to the world can make the world a better place for everyone. Share your sentences with your writing group and get feedback! Your teacher will monitor and help each of you!

Assess Learning:

Assess Learning Step Five: Teacher conference and presentation. Your teacher will conference with you and your group to review your ideas and help you with your sentences. After each student has completed all five steps in this minilesson, each student will present their main topic idea, related ideas and their sentences to the class!
