Real World So ... Virtual !!!
Slide 4:
It's Worthy to read it !!! I rushed myself inside the restaurant because I was hungry. I chose a table well away from the other customers because I wanted to enjoy the few minutes I had left for the day. I needed to eat and solve some programming problems in a system that I was developing. I also needed to plan my vacations, something that since long time ago, and sadly, I had forgotten the meaning of. I ordered a salmon fillet with capers in butter, a salad and an orange juice, after all, hunger is hunger but healthy rules are healthy rules right? Next I opened my laptop and got scared with that small voice behind me: - Sir, do you have a few coins? - No, I dont, boy. - Only a penny to buy bread. - Okay, I'll buy you one. For a change, my inbox was full of E-mails ...I get distracted with some poetry, beautiful formattings, and laughing at some crazy jokes ...Ah! This song takes me to London and good memories of a golden era. - Sir, ask them to put margarine and cheese please. I realized then that the boy still was there. - Okay I'll ask them, but then let me work, I am very busy, okay?
Slide 5:
My meal arrives and with it my problems. I asked what the boy wanted, and the employee asks me if I wanted to send him away. Some feeling of guilt prevents me to say yes. That's okay. Let him stay. The employee brings the bread, and a more decent meal for him. Next the boy sat down opposite to me and asked: - What are you doing sir? - I am reading a few E-mails. - What are E-mails? He asked ! - E-mails are electronic messages sent by people via the Internet (I knew he would not understand anything, but as a way to get rid of these questions, I added): - It's like a letter, but it only comes through the Internet. - Sir, do you have Internet? - Oh yes, it is essential in our today's world. - What is the Internet? - It's a place on the computer where we can see and hear many things, news, music, meet people, read, write, dream, work, learn. It has everything in the virtual world. - What is virtual? I decide to give a simplified explanation, knowing for certain that he wouldn't understand and leave, so I could eat without guilt. - Virtual is a place or thing that we imagine, something that we cannot touch, or travel to ... It's a place where we would like to be or a lot of things which we would love to do. We create our own fantasies, we transform that world almost like we wanted it to be.
Slide 6:
- Sounds good sir. I like it !!! - Boy, you understood the meaning of the word virtual? - Yes, I live also in this virtual world. - You got a computer ?! - I asked surprised ... - No, but my world is also this way ... this virtual way. My mother is out to work every day, she comes back home too late. I haven't seen her in a while. By myself I'm taking care of my little brother who lives crying of hunger and I give him water to make him think that it is soup. My older sister goes out every day too. She says that she is going out to sell her body but I dont understand, because she always comes back with her body. My father is in jail for a long time, but I always imagine our whole family together at home, with good food, lots of toys by
Christmas and I see also myself studying at school to become one day a doctor. This is virtual isn't it sir ?? I close the laptop but not fast enough to prevent some tears to fall on the keyboard. I wait for the boy to literally "devour" his plate and I pay for it, and gave him the change. In return I get one of the most beautiful and sincere smiles I've ever seen in my life and with a ... "Thank you sir, you are very kind." There, in that same instant, I had the greatest evidence of the fool virtual world we live in every day, while the harsh reality around us is for real and we pretend not to see it!
Slide 7:
Now... You have two choices
Slide 8:
1. Send this message to your friends or, 2. Erase it, staying indiferent
