The Purpose… The Library project aimed to teach research skills to 14-18 year old students
Teachers disagree with the student’s abilities and skills when it comes to research
Students think they know how to research using Google & Wikipedia
Why an online learning space? :
Why an online learning space? Wellington and her colleagues stated that:
Students rarely use the library for research anymore
Students use the internet and its 10,000,000 sites, which are available instantly
Not all sources on the internet are reputable
Students are learning to copy and paste, making information sound like their own
What does this method teach students? :
What does this method teach students? By using the internet and sites such as Google and Wikipedia, can students:
Assess information?
Recognize bias?
Identify Reputable Info?
The Goal… :
The Goal… Wellington and her colleagues project aimed to do the following:
Take students step by step through the research process
Teach students how to evaluate information effectively
Provide a range of research strategies, while showing students how to find an entire book, journal, newspaper, etc online
Help students find free information by reputable institutions
Show students to find primary articles and sources online
Teach students about note taking and bibliographies
Show how to write good essays and extend research skills beyond the internet
