Science and Problem Solving :

Science and Problem Solving September 13, 2010

Objectives :

Objectives Define science and scire Contrast science and technology Distinguish problems from exercises Apply problem solving strategies

An educated guess based on current knowledge is called :

An educated guess based on current knowledge is called a hypothesis a theory a law

A possible explanation of how or why and base on evidence is called a :

A description of what happens is called a scientific :

Science :

Science A process for observing, studying, and attempting to explain our world. Scire = To know Scientists attempt to find answers to questions.

Problem – a situation in which a person does not immediately see a course of action that will lead to a solution.

Problem – a situation in which a person does not immediately see a course of action that will lead to a solution. Exercise – a person can see a course of action to take in order to solve a problem

Problem Solving Characteristics :

Problem Solving Characteristics Curiosity Open mindedness Persistence Unafraid of failure Willingness to change ideas

Misconceptions :

Misconceptions You can’t write anything down unless you know the answer A way to solve a problem should be obvious when you first encounter it

Slide 11:

There is only one right way to solve a problem There is only one right answer Guessing is not allowed

Strategies :

Strategies Eliminate possibilities “We now know ten thousand ways not to build a light bulb.”

Slide 13:

Write a mathematical expression Talk to an expert

Slide 14:

Act it out Look for patterns Guess and check

Slide 15:

Work backwards Make a table, graph, model or drawing Solve a simpler or similar problem

Science vs Technology :

Science vs Technology Science seeks to explain objects and events in the world and universe. Learning about something for the sake of knowing it is called pure science. When we find a way to use the information that is called applied science or technology.

Example :

Example Pure science – the effect of unequal pressures on a surface. Technology – drinking straw
