Write Like an Academic :

Write Like an Academic Quoting and Paraphrasing

Avoiding Plagiarism :

Avoiding Plagiarism In your research, you will include a lot of information from other sources. You must credit these sources to avoid plagiarism There are three simple ways of including other writers’ work in your writing.

Quoting :

Quoting The first way is to quote. But, think about: How much to quote. You can’t just fill your work with quotations! Making sure that your quote is relevant. Making sure that you don’t over-quote from one source.

Quoting in Action :

Quoting in Action …However, according to Biber, “genre categories are determined on the basis of external criteria relating to the speaker’s purpose and topic; they are assigned on the basis of use rather than on the basis of form”, whereas “text types represent groupings of texts that are similar in their linguistic form, irrespective of genre” (1988, p. 170).

So, what is a quotation? :

So, what is a quotation? A quotation is an exact word for word copy of a source. We can use direct quotations to provide evidence of our understanding of our field, and support for our arguments and ideas.

How to quote :

How to quote The grammar of your sentences should be correct after placing the quotation within them. For shorter quotations, use quotation marks (“…”). Longer quotations should start on a new line and be indented. Quotation marks are not used. 2. (in APA, a longer quotation is defined as 40 words and above). Include the date and number(s) of the page(s) quoted. Note: check your conventions. They vary and can be different from the above!

What Is Paraphrasing ? :

What Is Paraphrasing ? Paraphrasing is completely rewriting someone else’s information and ideas in your own words . It does not mean just changing a word or two and passing it off as your own work!

How do we paraphrase? :

How do we paraphrase? By using reporting verbs Changing the word order Using synonyms Joining and dividing sentences Using different grammatical structures Usually, we use these techniques in combination!

Paraphrasing in Action :

Paraphrasing in Action The concept of text has been extensively defined by linguists. Halliday and Hasan (1976) maintain that a text is not a collection of sentences, but realized through sentences, and a text needs to form a ‘unified whole’ to be considered as text. They note that most teachers are sometimes unsure about whether their students’ compositions can be regarded as texts or not, and stress the fact that…

Crediting Paraphrases :

Crediting Paraphrases Each time you paraphrase, you must credit the source in your text. In this respect, there is no difference between paraphrasing and quoting.

The Value of Paraphrasing :

The Value of Paraphrasing It can be better than quoting from a poorly written source. It will stop you quoting too much! The thinking involved in rewriting will help you understand the source better.

Referencing :

Referencing When paraphrasing and quoting, we should always credit the source. But sometimes, we can just simply refer to general ‘ideas’ - without using the original text in our own work at all.

Referencing in Action :

Referencing in Action Other authors have adopted a more liberal approach’ (Brown, 2000; Coulter & Green, 1985; Ernst, 2007; Halter, 1993)…

When to use Reference only :

When to use Reference only When you want to show that the same idea or argument is found in different sources. To provide general support for an idea, without reference to any specific words in the text.

And Remember: :

And Remember: Always check and follow the conventions of the institution or publication you are writing for.
