Write Like an Academic:

Write Like an Academic Thinking about the Writing Process

Writing is a Process:

Writing is a Process A piece of writing is developed and brought to a satisfactory level through continued revision and reworking, often hard and painful…  An article or thesis will go through many drafts and changes as you consider what you want to say and how you want to say it… That's why a process approach to writing is adopted in this course…

Practising Writing:

Practising Writing It’s obvious that the more you write the better your writing will become…

Reading for Writing:

Reading for Writing Let’s not forget though that writing skills develop through reading, and constant exposure to language.  It’s amazing how many people who start working on their thesis have not ever sat down and studied someone else’s thesis.

Reading to Learn:

Reading to Learn People mainly read to acquire knowledge in their subject of interest. Yet, sometimes we should read just for the sake of observing language use, the way ideas and concepts are expressed in a language that is not our mother tongue.

Getting Started :

Getting Started So, get hold of a thesis or two and some articles in your subject area… Read for language – underline key words and phrases that might be useful to you… Look at the formatting, the headings and referencing… It’s simple – looking at good models is a highly effective method of learning.

The Audience:

The Audience The most important consideration in academic writing: The AUDIENCE.  We do not write for ourselves. The sole purpose in academic writing is to get our message across, to make ourselves understood. Therefore, when you write, you should always visualise your reader and your purpose.

Getting Feedback:

Getting Feedback The feedback you will get is a response to what you provide. Read widely, develop your language skills, plan and draft, and when you give your work to somebody make it as good as you can. And then be prepared to revise again…

The WLA Course Materials:

The WLA Course Materials The WLA Course Materials and Resources should help you in your journey…
