It’s amazing how many people who start working on their thesis have not ever sat down and studied someone else’s thesis.Reading to Learn: Reading to Learn People mainly read to acquire knowledge in their subject of interest. Yet, sometimes we should read just for the sake of observing language use, the way ideas and concepts are expressed in a language that is not our mother tongue. Getting Started : Getting Started So, get hold of a thesis or two and some articles in your subject area… Read for language – underline key words and phrases that might be useful to you… Look at the formatting, the headings and referencing… It’s simple – looking at good models is a highly effective method of learning. The Audience: The Audience The most important consideration in academic writing: The AUDIENCE. We do not write for ourselves. The sole purpose in academic writing is to get our message across, to make ourselves understood. Therefore, when you write, you should always visualise your reader and your purpose. Getting Feedback: Getting Feedback The feedback you will get is a response to what you provide. Read widely, develop your language skills, plan and draft, and when you give your work to somebody make it as good as you can.
