Stuff You Should Know Johnny Unitas was born May 7, 1933. He played in the NFL, or National Football League, for 17 years, from 1956-1974. He played for the Baltimore Colts for 16 years, playing his last year with the San Diego Chargers before retiring.

College and Life: 

College and Life Although small, listed at 6’1”, 195 lbs., Johnny U never gave up. He accepted a scholarship to Louisville University, and was drafted to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he was cut before the 1956 season started. He had 8 kids.

Accomplishments: 

Accomplishments Johnny Unitas was widely regarded as the best quarterback of all time. He was the MVP, or Most Valuable Player, in 1957, ’64 and ’67. He was voted to play in 10 Pro Bowls. Unitas was the first QB to throw for 40,000 yards. He was also the Player of the Decade (’60s). Johnny Unitas was named to the NFL All-Time Team. He was enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 1979. He won one Super Bowl and three NFL Championships.

Other Random Facts He died in Towson, Maryland, on September 11, 2002, of a heart attack. He left the NFL holding six passing records. They were: most pass attempts (5,186); most completions (2,830); most total yards (40,239); most touchdowns (290); most 300-yard games (26); and most consecutive games throwing touchdown passes (47).
