Start the class with a brain teaser. What everyday object is represented in this macro-photo? Hint:"Excuse me. I'm under a bit of pressure. I think it's just gas." Think-Pair-Share : Think-Pair-Share Teacher poses an open ended question, issues a challenge, or makes an observation. Students think about the topic and write down their ideas. Students pair up and combine their ideas and collaborate. Students then share their new ideas with the class. Give students time to think and organize their ideas. Keep Students Motivated with Movement : Keep Students Motivated with Movement Movement keeps blood flowing to the brain. It also provides an opportunity for phase change which keeps students engaged in the lesson. Incorporate kinesthetic activities into lessons Provide opportunities for movement Incorporating music can help facilitate movement Vary phases : Vary phases Be sure students are not in one phase more than 15 min/change activities frequently Changing activities or states frequently keeps students motivated, and motivation precedes engagement. Having a more varied class structure prevents monotony. Use Good Classroom Management : Use Good Classroom Management Prevent disruptions by using good classroom management. Students will have a harder time staying engaged in an activity if they are distracted. Use Technology : Use Technology Find out what technology your school has to offer, learn it, and then use it. Allow students to access information, reach out to other students, and express themselves and their ideas via the internet. Create and publish content in exciting new ways. Most students use technology on a regular basis outside of the classroom. Bringing it into the classroom makes learning feel more natural. Make Assignments Challenging : Make Assignments Challenging Assignments that are too easy can be completed without requiring any thought, increasing the chance of disruptions. Challenging assignments are more rewarding and leave students with a sense of accomplishment. Create assignments and tasks that are challenging but not overly difficult. Call on Students Randomly : Call on Students Randomly Keep students involved in class discussions by calling on students randomly to answer questions. Use note cards with student's names on them to facilitate discussions. Allow students to pass and ask for more time to answer Require students to provide any answer Allow for incorrect answers but reinforce correct answers Differentiate Lessons : Differentiate Lessons Provide help to students who need it. Students need to feel they understand the material to stay interested. Differentiating lessons enables all students the opportunity to stay engaged.
