Best Buddies Hawaii’s Baldwin High School’s 2010-2011 Chapter is a leader in creating community awareness, fundraising, commitment to excellence, community service projects, fun group activities and over all spirit! All of the One t0 One friendships at our school have made us all grow!Recruiting Volunteers: Recruiting VolunteersRecruiting Volunteers: Recruiting Volunteers Students members give out prizes and recruit their friends to sign-up during Club Rush Day FA walks the halls recruiting students through out the year Students shoot videos to go out on Schwa ( Sch ool W ide A nnoucements) And we recruit by being the most outstanding and fun club around!!!!!!!Communication: Communication Officers maintained excellent communication with each other We utilize a “phone-tree” and facebook to get the word out to other members, as well as using Schwa and the school announcements Student members & the Special Education Advisor check into FA’s room throughout the week Officers maintain communication with Programs Manager through phone calls and text throughout the week Faculty and Special Education Advisors communicate with the Programs Manager by phone and e-mail on a regular basisGroup Activities: Visit to the Mayor’s Office: Group Activities: Visit to the Mayor’s Office The entire Baldwin Best Buddies chapter was present as Chapter President Heather Paranada, along with her Buddy Rachel Barrett and Buddy Director Shaun Lebang, presented a Certificate of Appreciation for Maui County Mayor, Charmaine Tavares, in honor of her support for Best Buddies.Group Activities: Visit to the Mayor’s Office: Group Activities: Visit to the Mayor’s Office The trip to the Mayor’s Office was great because it is a rare privilege to be allowed there. We were able to learn more about the local political process and gave great public awareness for Best Buddies.Group Activities: Visit to the Maui Country Council : Group Activities: Visit to the Maui Country Council The Baldwin Chapter was invited to visit the Maui County Council. We ate delicious food.Other Activities: Life is Sweet Fundraiser: Other Activities: Life is Sweet Fundraiser “Life is Sweet” is a Dessert Festival that raises money for Best Buddies Hawaii. The Baldwin High School Chapter was instrumental in the success of this event.Other Activities: County Wide Best Buddies Dance: Other Activities: County Wide Best Buddies Dance Best Buddies at Baldwin High School hosted a county-wide Best Buddies Dance. Members from chapters all across the island came out to bust some moves with other Best Buddies! There were wonderful snacks and great tunes. Our Chapter President really stepped up and helped organize and coordinate this awesome event!Other Activities: Charity Walk Fundraiser: Other Activities: Charity Walk Fundraiser Baldwin students walked for charity at the 2011 Maui Visitor Industry Charity Walk which benefits over 190 different local charitable organizations. A fun time was had by all! Baldwin students raised the most money out of all Maui Best Buddies chapters!Community Impact: Big MAC (Moving Across Transition): Community Impact: Big MAC ( M oving Ac ross Transition) Baldwin High School Best Buddies students participated on a Student Advisory Panel at the 2011 Big MAC. The Department of Education sent out letters inviting Maui high school students attending special education classes, and their parents, to attend the seminar. Speakers from different government and private agencies were present to inform parents of services available for their children once they leave high school. A complimentary guide to all services, along with important contact information, was given to all attendees. The conference was hosted by Best Buddies Hawaii, Maui Developmental Disabilities Council, The Community Children’s Council of Maui, Department of Education, Nursefinders, HiloPa’a Project, Kokua Villa, Easter Seals, Hawaii Families As Allies, Quality Behavioral Outcomes, Maui Family Guidance Center, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and Workforce Development. Baldwin High School Buddy Director, Shaun L. spoke to the crowded room alongside other Best Buddies membersCommunity Impact: Service Announcements : Community Impact: Service Announcements Baldwin Best Buddies chapter has been very active in spreading the word about Best Buddies on the Baldwin campus. This is a picture of Best Buddies Peer Buddies, Buddies, Associate Members and Faculty Advisor performing the “Best Buddies Song” on the school-wide announcements (Schwa). The club has done other Schwa announcements promoting events and the campaign to “Spread the Word to End the Word”.Baldwin Best Buddies Assembly: Baldwin Best Buddies Assembly Baldwin High School’s Best Buddies Chapter hosted a school-wide assembly to raise awareness on campus about students with disabilities. The assembly included skits by the Baldwin High School Drama Club and included Special Guests Richard Michaels, Barry Williams and Maureen McCormick from the original Brady Bunch TV series.Extra, Extra, Read All About It!: Extra, Extra, Read All About It!One to One: Heather & Rachel: One to One: Heather & Rachel Heather and Rachel have been Buddies for two years and see each other oftentimes during lunch. Rachel loves to be around Heather and also loves to eat, so the two meet at lunch and Heather always tries to bring her a treat. Heather was really busy this year as a senior school leader. Not only was she Chapter President of Best Buddies, but she as also Vice President of the senior class . Despite both having busy senior years, their friendship continued to blossom. .One to One: Heather & Rachel: One to One: Heather & Rachel Rachel recently had to undergo a series of complicated medical procedures. Throughout this difficult time she found great comfort as Heather led the entire chapter in her time of need. This was a true Best Buddies moment, demonstrating the real value in the friendships we help to develop. When Rachel really needed a friend, she had one in Heather, not too mention 94 other members rooting for her too!One to One: Miguel & Tevin: One to One: Miguel & Tevin Miguel and Tevin are always having a great time. Every time we see them on campus they are cracking each other up and talking story. They truly are a great friendship. Tevin thinks Miguel is a cool guy because he is a real ladies man! Miguel and Tevin are always cruising the hallways at school together, but of course not during class time.One to One: Cassy & Ka’u: One to One: Cassy & Ka’u Cassy is very successful as a National Amateur Golf Champion and she takes time out to see Ka’u and go on outings. Ka’u thinks that it is really cool to have a popular and well known Peer Buddy . And for Cassy it is great to have a friend she can just cut loose and relax with. As a result Cassy has matured greatly and will continue to be a super advocate for the disabled in the future. As the #1 amateur female golfer in the country, who knows, one day she could be one of our Best Buddies celebrity advocates.One to One: Cassy & Ka’u: One to One: Cassy & Ka’uOne to One: Remmy & Jonathon: One to One: Remmy & Jonathon Remmy and Jonathon are both shy guys, so they’re really a perfect pair. Faculty Advisor Ted Lusk says: While they may be shy, you know they’ve always got your back, because the two of them never miss a Best Buddies event.One to One: Remmy & Jonathon: One to One: Remmy & JonathonOne to One: Alyssa & Whitney: One to One: Alyssa & Whitney “Whitney and I easily bonded because we both laugh at pretty much everything. When I first met her we were both quiet. However, after seeing each other around so much, and meeting up for Best Buddies activities, we grew more comfortable with each other. Our friendship has come so far that every time we pass each other in the hall we are so loud. Every time we see each other in school we cannot leave with just saying hi. We talk story for a few minutes until one of us needs to leave. Whitney is a fun and chill girl who can easily brighten up my day. “ - Alyssa P.One to One: Isaiah & Pomai: One to One: Isaiah & Pomai Our friendship is great because we have a lot of fun together. It’s really natural like any other friendship. We love to goof off and have fun together. I always sees Pomai in between 2 nd and 4 th period and we always say “hi” and “talk story” We like to go bowling, play baseball and go to mini golf.One to One: Isaiah & Pomai: One to One: Isaiah & Pomai “Pomai is a funny guy, easy to talk with and just really fun to be around” - Isaiah Y.Overcoming Adversity: Overcoming Adversity At the beginning of the school year the principal, who was a big supporter of Best Buddies, went on leave. The new replacement principal, Gwen Ueoka , was not familiar with Best Buddies and was a little resistant to approving Best Buddies activities. The FA and Officers came up with the great idea to invite their new principal to the Best Buddies Matching Party and have her hand out the membership certificates to all 90+ members. This solution was a great way to involve the principal in a way that she could better understand what Best Buddies was all about. All future club activities were enthusiastically approved!
