Objective 2Adapting to the Environment: Adaptation - any inherited characteristic that increases the chance of an organism surviving and producing offspring. Includes: How an organism gets its energy Shape or structure of its body Behavior Adapting to the EnvironmentFox: Fennec – desert fox with large ears to help it stay cool in the heat. -Blood flow in ears releases heat -Fur color blends in with the desert FoxFox: Arctic Fox – arctic fox with small ears, legs, and nose that lives in the cold north. -Small limbs help reduce heat loss -Fur color matches its environment (summer and winter) FoxFox: Red Fox – moderate sized ears that lives in the grasslands and woodlands. -Moderate ears allows for moderate temperatures -Fur color blends in with the environment FoxPlants: Grasses – grow in several different environments. -Have deep roots -Produce seeds -Grow in different environments As long as their roots survive, the grass will grow. PlantsPlants: Trees – if leaves and stems die, then the entire tree can die. They also require a lot of water to survive. -Coniferous trees: (pine tree) does well in colder climates because they have needle-shaped leaves that stay green all year round. -Deciduous trees: (maple tree) loses its leaves, but with enough water, the leaves will grow back. PlantsPlant Adaptations: Odors – mustard plant gives off odors to keep insects away Poison - Ivy, oak, and nicotine plants produce poison to prevent from being eaten Traps – Venus Fly Trap captures insects and digests it Plant AdaptationsPlant Behaviors: Gravity – roots grow down while stems grow up Touch – vines will wrap around objects to help raise it into the sunlight Light – stems will grow toward the sunlight Plant BehaviorsReview: What allows the arctic fox to adapt to its cold environment? What allows the desert fox to adapt to its hot environment? Which types of plants can survive anywhere? Why? Name a plant behavior that allows it to survive in its environment.
