Cellular Respiration:

Cellular Respiration A guide to learn how YOU are making energy to work 

Cells:

Cells The smallest structure that can live by itself Every cell contains nucleic acid, cell membrane and ribosomes

Plant Cell:

Plant Cell Photoautotroph Chloroplasts make food for the cell Has a central vacuole and a cell wall

Animal Cell:

Animal Cell Heterotroph Mitochondria supports the cell by producing ATP (an usable form of energy) from carbs

Us animals….:

Us animals…. Do cellular respiration to make our usable energy = ATP! It takes place in mitochondria in the cell Oxygen is not required, but preferred to make more energy

Overview of cellular respiration:

Overview of cellular respiration

Glycolysis:

Glycolysis 2 ATP total created 2 NADH (electron carrier) 2 Pyruvate (the compounds that go to next step for modification)

Kreb’s Cycle:

Kreb’s Cycle 2 Pyruvate → 2 Acetyl CoA (on the way into the mitochondria) → Oxaloacetate 4 NADH 2 FADH2 CO2 ATP

Electron Transport Chain:

Electron Transport Chain Produces LOTS of ATP

Oxidative phosphorylation :

Oxidative phosphorylation Concentration difference causes a passive movement of H+ through ATP Synthase which makes ATP!!!!!!

Anaerobic Respiration:

Anaerobic Respiration Oxygen is NOT required Alternate way of making ATP without O2 Does not go into the mitochondria, but takes place in cytoplasm Faster production, lesser amount of ATP

Alcoholic Fermentation:

Alcoholic Fermentation 2 ATP 2 NADH Ex. Production of alcohol

Lactic Acid Fermentation:

Lactic Acid Fermentation 2 ATP 2 NADH Ex. Human muscle (causes muscle ache)

Examples of Anaerobic Resp. :

Examples of Anaerobic Resp. -Wine -Muscle Ache
