Critical areas which require a high level of flexibility: Thinking Processes Business Processes Manufacturing Processes Joe Husidic (BEng, MEd) Specialist for Industrial Research & Development January 2009 © Flexible Thinking Processes : Flexible Thinking Processes Lean Thinking, was originally championed by James P. Womack and Daniel T. Jones (Lean Thinking, 1996, Simon & Schuster UK Ltd). Key lean manufacturing principles: specify value by specific product, identify the value stream for each product, make value flow, pursue perfection. According to Womack & Jones managers need to “learn to see: to see the value stream, to see the flow of value...” (2003, p. 94) Joe Husidic (BEng, MEd) Specialist for Industrial Research & Development January 2009 © Open Eyes and Minds : Open Eyes and Minds August 2008 Learning and Development Consultant: Joe Husidic Expanding on the original teachings of Womack and Jones we at Wiseman Institute believe that all employees need to be able to see value. We also believe that all employees need to be able to recognize the difference between value and waste. For this to occur it is necessary to educate employees on how to refine their “thought processes”, with the aim of improving the flexibility, creativity and efficiency of the “thought process” . Flexible Business Processes : Flexible Business Processes Effective business processes, such as: sales & marketing, purchasing, planning, finances, distribution are the corner stone of company’s overall competitiveness. Understanding evolving needs of different customers is an important prerequisite for the development of flexible and ever evolving business processes. Joe Husidic (BEng, MEd) Specialist for Industrial Research & Development January 2009 © Flexible Manufacturing Processes : Flexible Manufacturing Processes Flexible manufacturing processes are the result of flexible thinking and flexible business processes. To achieve this objective it is necessary to engage all employees in a structured learning process, with an objective of educating all employees about key principles of lean manufacturing. Only all employees through an active and collaborative effort can convert a company from a traditional set up to a lean set up. Over the next few months we will develop an experimental workstation at Wiseman Institute, which will be based on lean manufacturing principles. Some aspects of the development process, will be published on You Tube, to enable our students to study key principles of lean manufacturing online. For this purpose we have engaged engineers, who have the expertise in the development and implementation of flexible workstations Joe Husidic (BEng, MEd) Specialist for Industrial Research & Development January 2009 © Photos of the experimental machine : Photos of the experimental machine Joe Husidic (BEng, MEd) Specialist for Industrial Research & Development January 2009 © Slide 11: Joe Husidic (BEng, MEd) Specialist for Industrial Research & Development January 2009 © Slide 12: Joe Husidic (BEng, MEd) Specialist for Industrial Research & Development January 2009 © Slide 13: Joe Husidic (BEng, MEd) Specialist for Industrial Research & Development January 2009 © Support & Collaboration : Support & Collaboration We would like to invite Australian manufacturers to collaborate with us on this research project. Our objective is to develop educational solutions, which will help our manufacturing sector to improve its competitiveness and overall standing in the marketplace. Also, we would like to invite other educational institutions, such as Universities, TAFE Institutes and other providers of training to contact us if they would be interested in participating in a collaborative research effort.
