According to IDEA, the participants that we served are considered persons with disabilities because our project served students from ages 3-21 who had varying types of disabilities. IDEA states that a person must be 3-21 and meet one of the thirteen disabilities. We also worked with the college transition students at UCP. Halloween Bash had 321 guests!Perceptions of Differences: Perceptions of Differences We all weren’t sure what it would take to make this Halloween Bash a great experience for the kids, but that became the last of our worries once we began the process and found that even the planning process was fun and exciting. The experience we gained from the bash is one that we will take with us as we enter our journeys in becoming teachers. Seeing the smiles and hearing the laughs of the kids and their families showed us that even with a disability no one should ever be left out.Connections to Your Course: Connections to Your Course This project was completed for EEX 3241 with Dr. Kelly Grillo . Having been a part of this project, we understand how UDL (Universal Design for Learning) plays such a huge role for all students. Having an environment that is safe and appropriate for all student will heighten the positive response of each child. We understand the importance of planning after participating in this bash. Having a clear plan and guide helps to ensure all important ideas and/or activities happen and also ensures that time is followed and accounted for. Having social skills is very important for all children. Having a way to model such skills is also very crucial when teaching social skills. After this project we see the importance of having opportunities for every child to be able to practice using social skills.Civic Engagement: Civic Engagement Being able to help those with disabilities through civic engagement has huge rewards. Many people living with disabilities experience isolation and rejection. Having someone take time out of their own lives to help, teach, or simply spend time with someone with a disability gives that person hope that people do care and that they are not alone. Experiences and stories can be shared in an effort to show both parties that we are all not as different as we think. We would encourage everyone to embrace the service-learning experience. Service-learning gives you a hands-on way to experience concepts and ideas and also to make someone’s day by showing you care!Final Thoughts: Final Thoughts We were all very excited at the outcome of the Halloween Bash. Seeing the reactions from both the kids and their families made the entire experience one we will always remember! You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
